Who I Am As a Writer. The traditional model of the writing process includes brainstorming, outlining, writing, revising, editing, and then finally publishing. But not many people actually follow this burdensome process step-by-step, going through all of the six processes. I don't brainstorm on paper, this is because I like to get things done briskly. Although brainstorming is a critical process, I do it in my brain due to the fact that in my brain, I know what to write about right after I get my assignment.
Therefore my first goal for this class is to refresh my memory on writing a good paper. I want to learn to be a better and more effective writer. Then I want to be able to take what I have learned from this class and put it to use in the future classes. It has been 26 years since I have taken an English class. I am having a hard time remembering what strategies I have used in the past to become a better writer.
One lesson Jamal learned was to write with his heart first and revise later with his mind. Though Jamal for some time had been writing in his notebooks, he sat in front of Forrester’s typewriter at first unable to produce. Forrester then gives Jamal a piece of his writing and tells Jamal to type what he sees until his own words and thoughts take over and until he is able to type his own ideas. Seeing Jamal make the transition from Forrester’s work to his own creativity is amazing. Jamal promised that he would not take anything that he wrote out

I stopped to ponder for a bit. I had to read the quote again and re-read it one more time before I could think about what it really meant, if it had only one meaning or maybe more, if it's a metaphorical term or maybe meant to be taken literally. I then automatically thought of the story Fahrenheit 451. I was to read this novel for an assignment in Philosophy, I read the entire book in a few days, but just because I read through the book page by page did not mean I comprehended what Bradbury was saying; just as when I read this quote by Voltaire, which I had to read and re-read again to start to comprehend what it meant. After all of that I still don't know if I have a full understanding, but I have my own view on the quote, as does everyone else, which is different from mine, and one another, that to me is, Philosophy.

In order for me to get to this conversation with writing started I need to set aside all of my intimidation with writing and need for perfections aside just to get something even written down. What gets written down may not be the greatest, but no one really has a life changing conversation with someone that they just met anyways so my first draft of anything does not really have much high expectations. Once I get past that writing is not intimidating and that I am going to have a conversation with whoever might read this it becomes an easier process and outlook. Previously I’ve always thought of writing as something I always dreaded because it would suck the life out of me and usually bring my grade along with it, but as I have gotten older writing has become a part of my life and something I have changed my perspective on completely in a way that I look at it as something friendly, like a chat with a close friend. While I find myself not upset when I am not writing papers in class, if it were not for writing in general I might have to strain myself to not pick up my phone every five minutes just to send a text message or post
The more I write the more I’m starting too actually like writing. There was a time when writing was my worst nightmare. I didn’t like writing but I knew it was something that I would have to start doing more and more of. Even to this day sometimes I still just watch the clock tick with nothing but a blank sheet of paper in front of me wait for my inspiration to come but sometimes it doesn’t show up. While creativity and inspiration play an important role in my writing I also try to have good organization skills along with good discipline and I always go over my writing numerous times to check for eras.
After procrastinating a lot of my homework this year, I have learned now, for second semester that I need to step it up a little bit. Procrastinating never leads to good things. If you procrastinate, you just end up being more stressed out than before. It’s just better to get your homework done and over with so you don’t have to deal with it anymore. My goal for second semester is to get my homework done as soon as I get it.
