A code of ethics is a pertinent piece of information enclosed in most employee handbooks designed to maintain a safe and fair environment within an organization. The information usually included focuses on social issues and also encompasses the mission statement of the organization. The ethical code sets out to help the employee make decisions in any questionable situations that may arise in relation to social issues within the organization. A code of ethics also sets out to govern the behavior of the organizations employees and in the case of a professional organization lays the groundwork for a code of professional responsibility. I chose to review one such organization’s code of ethics, the American Counseling Association. The American Counseling Association’s code of ethics is extremely detailed and covers a wide variety of issues. The ACA Code of Ethics is twenty pages in length and includes eight main sections. The detailed sections are: The Counseling Relationship, Confidentiality, Professional Responsibility, Relationships With other Professionals, Evaluation, Supervision, Research, and Resolving Ethical Issues. It is obvious within the code that in the profession of counseling a great deal of attention must be paid to the respect of the culturally diverse population of clients with which counselors deal. It is immediately stated in the ACA Code of Ethics Preamble that “Association members recognize diversity and embrace a cross- cultural approach in support of the worth, dignity, potential, and uniqueness of people within their social and cultural contexts.” As it is laid out in the Code of Ethics, counselors must pay great attention to the specific cultural sensitivities that might exist in such a diverse client population.
