Why does a manager need to be acquainted with information systems? State University of New York College at Old Westbury Introduction In the times we live in today and growing up in the 21st century, technology, and the advances within technology are so important for managers to have extensive knowledge and adequate training for Information Technology. Managers should be updated on the operating systems, spreadsheets, ethics, privacy and security issues and issues that affect decision-making within a business. Information Technology It is imperative that managers have extension knowledge about information software (programs), work together with programmers, and participate with decision-making. What is information technology (IT)? Information technology is a wide field, and has enabled organizations across the world to work in an efficient manner. It plays a very important role in effective management and running a business. It has contributed largely to the process advancements in organizations. (Rampur, 2000-2009, 2010) Information technology is vital to the operation of modern businesses (Rainer & Cegielski, 25). Organizations cannot function without information technology. Every manager and professional staff should learn about IT (Rainer & Cegielski, 26). Most executives in the West recognize the importance of Information Technology, their experience with it as a strategic business tool is often frustration. Invite any group of senior executives in the United States or Europe to list their complaints about Information Technology and they will typically identify five problems: • IT investments are unrelated to business strategy. • Payoff from IT investments is inadequate. • There’s too much “technology for technology’s sake”. • Relations between IT users and IT
