Let the bull spill his blood.” (Page 40). Gilgamesh and Enkidu wrestle with the bull that Anu sent and kill it. (pgs- 56-61) 82: “Works of damnation cannot lead to salvation.” The Bodhisattva and Hui-yen came across a monster when they came to The River of Sands. This monster was originally a marshal and because he had broken a crystal dish was banished and transformed into a Monster upon the orders of the Jade Emperor. The Bodhisattva questioned the monster because he was being punished for a sin and is was still committing sins by eating travellers who happen to pass by the river. “If the Government gets hold of you they’ll flog you to death; if the Buddhists get hold of you they’ll starve you to death.” The monster replied telling the Bodhisattva that it didn’t matter how many travellers he ate or the fact that he ate them because he would still be stuck in the river trying not to starve either way. “Heaven helps those who mean well” The Bodhisattva made the monster an offer and told him about how they were on a quest to find a seeker of scriptures.
In Sophocles “Oedipus the king”, Oedipus was sent to mount Cithaeron as a new born baby to die after his father (King Laius) was cursed by the gods and heard of a prophecy that his son is to kill his father and marry his mother (Queen Jocasta). The Shepard in charge of this could not kill the baby so instead Oedipus is adopted. Later Oedipus hears about the prophecy, and leaves, afraid that the prophecy would come true. Along the way he gets in a fight with a man and kills him, unknowingly his father. He then solves a riddle from the Sphinx, which has been terrorizing a kingdom, and in return, the kingdom gives him their queen's hand in marriage, which is his biological mother.
Things that are already known are used to guide us to further delve into the unknown. The process of journeying into the unknown can be divided into three parts, separation from the known, transformation, and returning to the known. The Sumerian myths of The Epic of Gilgamesh and Inanna: Queen of Heaven and Earth are two of the oldest stories to portray the journey to the unknown. Gilgamesh and his friend Enkidu first journey to the unknown in their quest through Cedar Forest to kill the great beast Humbaba, a terrifying abomination put there by the gods to keep men away from the forest. Gilgamesh desires immortality and desires to kill Humbaba to become famous and remembered by his people, if he cannot become physically immortal he can become immortal figuratively, engraving his name in history.
Chiron has been suspected as a perpetrator, and replaced by the extremely antagonistic Tantalus, who was cursed to an eternal fast for serving his own children at a feast for the gods. In the end, Percy rescues Grover, defeats Polyphemus (with help from Tyson, who was thought to be dead at the time), and retrieves the Golden Fleece. Chiron is re-hired and everything starts to become perfect again. They return and place the Golden Fleece on Thalia’s tree bringing it back to life. The only bad part is that this now gives Kronos another chance to control the prophecy.
