The Epic of Gilgamesh For many centuries, in many different civilizations there have been legends and stories about supernatural men who have inspired the people from their culture through bravery, honor, and skill. We call these legends or characters Epic Heroes. There are certain things that these epic heroes, surprisingly have all in common. All of them: face enemies while struggling in their epic journey, the epic hero would encounter women as temptresses who threaten the completion of the epic hero’s journey, at the end of the epic journey, the hero must complete a task by himself, and after the final task is successfully achieved, the hero would return to his people as a hero. The guardian of the forest was a demon called Humbaba; he was a servant of Enlil, the god of earth, wind, and air. Both Gilgamesh and Enkidu began their journey to the forbidden cedar forest. Side by side, as good friends they fought Humbaba in a tough battle. They were able to defeat the monster because of the help they received by Shamash, the god of the sun. After killing Humbaba, Gilgamesh and Enkidu decide to build a raft with the wood of the trees that they stole from the forbidden cedar forest. With this raft both men would return floating back to Uruk. During their return Ishtar, the goddess of love tried to seduce Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh refused her offer. Ishtar was furious and hurt, talked to her father Anu, the god of the sky. Anu sent the bull of heaven, and the bull brought with him seven years of food scarcity. But once again, Gilgamesh and Enkidu managed to wrestle the bull and kill him. The gods got together in a meeting and decided that either Gilgamesh or Enkidu had to die as punishment for their behavior. They decide that the one that was going to die was Enkidu, and so he did of a slow and suffering death from a disease given to him by the gods (“Gilgamesh Summary”…show more content…
