From the language and personalised tone he used in his writing, Rogers may be targeting an audience of young nerds, who are unsure of being proud of themselves. Rogers claims that nerds should embrace their nerdiness and not conform to societal stereotypes of them because of the success they will gain later in their lives. In paragraph 1, he dismisses society’s perceptions of nerds as “narrow-minded and thoughtless” and defines two key features of nerdiness as the “obsession with mastering every insane detail of their interest” and the “inability to understand… societal norms”, which nerds should embrace. He moves on to attributes that “virtually every modern blessing… originated with a nerd”, providing successful examples of nerds like Einstein and Newton in paragraph 3. Stating too their successes are acknowledged by society, who perceives them as “geniuses”, albeit only later in life.
The sexual motive is taken to condone all sorts of behavior which, if it had any other end in view, we would be condemned as merciless, treacherous, and unjust.” rings so true to me. I totally agree with this statement. How can one justify leaving a spouse because they no longer sexually satisfy you? When we marry, we marry for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health. So does certain illness give us an exemption from these vows?
She believes she has truly found love in this asylum and to her it feels pretty good. Towards the end of the text Lewis kisses her out of the safety of Julie. She blushed she was surprised she loved it. She is mad of course she is, she is in an asylum but the message Nowra is trying to put across is that everyone is mad when it comes to love. Cherry seems to become more nutty when she falls for Lewis.
It’s been largely trivialised by our culture, so people end up thinking that depressed is synonymous to sad; it’s been reduced to a mood. They don’t realize how insidious it is, that it’s always gonna be there and that there’s something wrong with your brain chemicals - they won’t take you seriously until you say it’s a chemical thing.” Ultimately that is what depression is, a chemical problem. It’s biological, people have to change their outlook on depression for the stigma to fully deteriorate. When people start accepting that, I’m positive that our society will start being progressive and people who’re diagnosed won’t have to be as terrified to let people know of their condition. “A lot of people think that something has to happen for you to have depression, so it gets harder to explain that nothing happened.
He hated the fact that people thought that scientists “look for the better cigarette filter or a softer face tissue”, he believed that a scientist are paid to increase and enhance the level of knowledge and truth there is in the world. He believes if you increase the world of truth and knowledge the world becomes “richer”. Despite Dr. Breed’s enthusiastic new way to research, people unfortunately still disagreed with the way he thought.
We are gradually becoming unable to know right from wrong and Postman believes that we are amusing ourselves to death because we do not even know why and refuse to ask why which Postman sees as a problem in society. However, he believes that this apathetic way of living in a filter bubble can be overcome by schools. To Postman schools are a gateway to conquering decadence however I believe that it is
Second, extreme narcissism have to be willing to enter the realm of their feelings again. They create a false identity in order to survive, so they not show the true person inside of them and create many false identities. They are changing their personality to “bad as” or intimidating and scary, and can also appearance as “nice guy/person” Another appearance is comedy; everyone wants to include this person because they are a lot of fun. The success oriented narcissism is a person who always use you, and when you not have anything more to offer, you are history. Dr. Samuel mentions examples of success oriented narcissism on his experience in life with his friends.
Gilberto Pena Brent Jackson English 122 19 June 2013 Evaluation Argument Daniel Boorstin in his writing “Technology and Democracy” disputes that the human interest in technological advancement does not always lead to solutions but rather more troubles. As humans our society is always in search of bigger better a newer ways to improve on our standard of living, what we fail to observe is what Boorstin disputes in his article. Boorstin believes that we in fact are actually losing more than we are gaining but fail to recognize the problems that are to be had with new technological advances. As fascinating as Boorstin’s ideas may be suggestive of at first glance, his ideas on technology aren’t all that correct. Yes, we may desire
Modesty is how much skin is showing in different situations and in different topics. Lewis mentions that there are people out in the world who want to make people enslaved to sexual desires just so that they can make money off of people. In all reality there really isn’t a cure to sexually desires, the only real cure is if we decide ourselves to be cured. Lewis mentions that our instincts our contrary to our Christian values. He states that it is either Christianity went wrong or our instincts went bad.
Human example and influence are also very powerful and can corrupt the mind eager for recognition or that craves to feel wanted and accepted. The morals and values that this type of person has been taught are pushed to the back of his/her mind and become less important than the need to "fit in". Unfortunately for these people, any attention and recognition is sought after, even if it is negative. There is an obvious difference between those who are afflicted with no conscience at birth and those who have one. No amount of moral teaching or love and comfort will keep these people satisfied and happy to be "good".
