Although this may not be the “right” way to teach, by others standards, they seem to be working more than ever. The academic process Finns present to their students, has many countries baffled wanting to know, what is Finland's secret? The steps to becoming successful may not sound typical but, Finns provide school funding, smaller schools, and knowledge of a class rather than the grade. The steps Finns take and the different outlook on many things help the learning process. Finland's school's allow them to receive the funding they need to better the children's education.
It brings money for research, credibility for the country, and medicine improvements. All of this cannot happen without education. Improving and supporting education is very important for a country’s development. The middle class is the majority.
I agree wholeheartly that our students deserve the best of the best teaching our children. But has CPS done their 'best' in providing funding for training appropriate staff and creating tests that accurately assess the bilingual student? How invested in the ELL students are they? The myth of education pertains to the essential human need for empowerment. We believe that going to school to be educated and getting outstanding grades is the key to success and prosperity in life; that those who excel in the classroom are the ones who gain authority and power. Knowledge is power- we have all heard it at least once before. For this reason, we as people are inclined to believe that formal schooling ultimately leads to power, control, security and respect. However, Malcolm X’s excerpt “Learning to Read” taken from his autobiography, demystifies such a myth.
