What Makes Marriage Happy? In the United States, one marriage out of two ends in divorce. There are several reasons for divorce, and there are many factors that influence people who decide to divorce. However, when I asked five of my friends why they got a divorce, they all had the same answer: “I wasn’t happy.” One of them revealed to me that she became unhappy after the first three years, but because of her daughter, she stayed two more years before leaving her relationship. There are many people in this situation, and for some of them, things are getting worse day after day. Jhumpa Lahiri seemed to be concerned about this situation in her short story “Interpreter of Maladies”. Indeed, in this story, Mrs. Das, one of the main characters seemed to be like these women who, because of their children, stayed in their marriage even though they were not happy. Because she was so unhappy, she cheated on her husband and had a son by another man. She kept her adultery a secret for eight years. “No of course not. And no one knows, of course. No one at all. I’ve kept it a secret for eight whole years’’ (Lahiri 521). Unlike some women, she didn’t divorce, but she was tired of carrying the huge burden of guilt, unhappiness and shame that came from having a child out of wedlock. In order to understand why people are unhappy in their marriage, I am trying to understand what makes a marriage work. I am hoping that these understandings will lead me, or anybody reading this paper, to a future relationship. One of the best ways to understand why people are not happy in the marriage is to find the ingredients of a happy marriage or what makes marriages happy. Many couples may find that if their marriage lacks any of these ingredients, it could be the cause of their marital unhappiness. There are many things that impact marital satisfaction.
