My Personal Approach to Learning Essay Evola Dawson Dr. Winchester, English Professor English 1013: Freshman English II Learning is imperative to life and in order for it to be effective, it must be affective. There are many ways that one can approach learning. My personal approaches to learning are practical examples, hands on, and open discussion. These are three ways that I have proven to be effective in my life as it pertains to learning. Practical examples are things that I can relate to that give me a clear picture of what is being taught.
You have a visual/graphic learning style. Recalling pictures, diagrams, or slideshows while taking a test means you visually learned the material. Learning by sight is probably one of the most common learning styles. Educators often use visual aids to teach, because students often understand the material better. Being able to see what has been being talked about in the class all week, makes learning easier for a visual learner.
I can learn about information that is trying to be taught by using hands-on problem-solving. I am improving my ability to be become a thinker by finding time to reflect independently on new information and looking for opportunities to work independently. I try to be sensitive to individuals’ feelings by giving positive feedback. I present constructive criticism in a way that I hope others would not take offense to. Knowing others strengths in an online learning environment helps me understand how they think.
They are identified in a person but aren’t really the person’s number one choice. The preferred strategies are the strategies that help the person learn and cope to their needs. Identified strategies are there and also help but the person would prefer the other strategies over them. As discussed earlier, kinesthetic strategies embody actively engaging into the lesson. On the contrary, aural study strategies engage “attending classes, discussions, and tutorials, discussing topics with others and teachers, and using a tape recorder.” People who are good listeners and learn better by hearing have aural strategies.
The concept of learning is more complex than one would think. I would explain learning first by defining what it means. To me learning is the process of receiving and processing new information. Learning takes place almost every aspect of life and not just in school. If I were to explain this to someone that has never taken this course I would explain that in order to learn you have to be receptive to it.
The middle school students increased their abilities to locate main ideas when challenged with exercises in the lesson cycle. The lesson cycle was effective because it gave students practice with text structures, signal words, and graphic organizers (Montelongo, Herter, Ansaldo, & Hatter, 2010). The students also confirmed their comprehension through the correct rewriting of the given text. The authors conclude the study by acknowledging that further study is needed in order to evaluate the quality of expository writing and its effectiveness on comprehension. Reflective practice is important to the development of lecturers as professionals as it enables us to learn from our experiences of teaching and make easier student learning. Developing reflective practise means developing ways of reviewing our own teaching so that it becomes a routine and a process by which we might continuously develop. To begin with I have learned that by knowing myself better and reflecting upon my own emotions and behaviors I will be better able to master my practice as a professional. (Hansten & Jackson, 2009). Upon reflecting on the reading and my own experiences, I have found that I am a visual tactile learner. I learn by seeing and touching. I had forgotten about the other types of learning and communication methods, and I settled into what is comfortable for me.
VARK is a magnificent tool online that simply helps identify the different types of learning styles that are out there and helps guide individuals in the right path as far as learning goes. VARK stands for Visual, Aural, Read/write, and last but not least Kinesthetic. Visual, Aural, and Read/write mean exactly what they say. These individuals learn best by doing just that. Visual learners need to see things in order to learn, aural learners are better when they hear the information, and reading/writing learners perform best reading information and writing it down.
The important influence of behaviors on learning can be studied by the behavior that occurs after learning has been initiated or stored. Behavior and learning are codependent on each other. Behavior is observable, and this makes the process of learning more easily observable as well. The two types of behavioral learning have aided in understanding the concepts involved in improved learning through conditioning. These new realizations have been converted into the classrooms to better educate students.
