I would describe organized crime as groups of people taking the time to commit criminal activity without being caught by law enforcement officers. I have in the past thought about the mafia or drug cartels concerning organized crime. I had never given much thought to gangs being a part of organized crime. Many organized crime groups have law enforcement and politicians on their payroll, which disturbs me. The very people whose job is to protect society will deceive people to make illegal money.
When the group with the most power changes, the acts that are considered to be criminal change. Society is affected by the concept of the “choice theory” because it needs to figure out what punishment fits the crime to keep other criminals from committing the same crimes. Society need to make this laws to have control over law and order within their societies. It allows them away to keep law abiding citizens saver in their own
It protects the guilty rather than the victims. This rule basically states that evidence obtained illegally cannot be used in a criminal trial. The basis of this rule is supposed to prevent the police and other sections of the government from illegally searching or violating our homes and our privacy. When all it really does is prevents the truth from surfacing and help criminals go free. After researching both sides of this issue, in no way am I stating that I don’t understand the determination of the opposing side to keep this rule.
I personally am a strong believer that an “ideal society” should have no guns; nevertheless crime is a big problem to the citizens of our society and guns are necessary. Therefore, it is not recommended that we ban guns completely. The most pragmatic thing to do is to reduce the availability of guns and make it difficult to procure them by making sure that they are given only to people who are mentally capable of handling them. There is a definite need to ban guns since their liberal usage leads to large-scale public massacres, which are suited for the field of war, not civilized society. Weapons like automatic rifles and assault weapons are tools created with the purpose of mass killings.
Like the item says, 'functionalist sociologists focus on how far individuals accept the norms and values of society.' Durkheim blames people not being fully integrated into society’s norms and values as to why they commit crime. So he said once people have served their time for their crime, they should be reintegrated. It’s a strength that Durkheim suggests them being reintegrated as it means they’re less likely to reoffend if they feel they belong to their society and do not look for status through crime. However, interactionists would say that agents of social control cause crime, not the society you are in.
This makes it harder for the law enforcement to detect and track or figure out the organization. (Organized Crime, 2007). In a Bureaucratic organization they are formal, and do have protocols, procedures, regulations and rules to stop lower members from making decisions without the go ahead or approval like the patron-client groups are able to. In the patron-client organizations the lower members are able to act out and do business and acts without an approval from higher up leaders as long as it is beneficial and helps the organization. In a bureaucratic organization the finger and blame gets put on the financial burdens and leaders as to in a patron-client organization all of the members are responsible and held accountable for either failure or success (WeeKoh, 2009).
If I was asked now what organized crime is I would answer in a different way. Organized crime is a group of people that have come together as one to commit illegal crimes. Each person will have their own part that they are assigned to when the illegal activity takes place. One could be the watch out, the talker, the gun holder and etc... Each person is help liable for their part in the crime and must carry through. If they do not carry out their portion of the crime correctly, they usually will have to answer to the president of the organization and that person is usually not the nice one.
Terrorist and criminal organizations have many similarities, such as their use of the disenfranchised people of society for the organization’s political advantage, basic structures, recruiting base and use of religion. Organized crime is linked to the production, smuggling and sale of illegal goods and services such as trafficking in drugs or arms, smuggling of people, human trafficking, especially women, and loan sharking. Organizations that engage in these activities usually have no territorial aspirations and have every reason to stay out of the way of the authorities and their law enforcement agencies. Organized crime organizations like this are far more numerous than the branches of the Mafia, Triads or Yakuza. However, they are not stable nor bureaucratically organized enterprises.
While I would not say Dr. Hill’s argument is absolutely false-there are exceptions to every rule, I would say he is misguided with how much power a fence possesses. For the most part, Fences are creatures of opportunity; Fences didn’t create the thief, the thief created the fence by stealing in the first place. While some fences do finance, plan, and train thieves-these fences are a rare breed. The vast majority of fences merely act as businessmen and buy merchandise as it comes in “No questions asked”. Before I share my views on how to reduce crime, let me explain why I disagree with some of Dr. Hill’s arguments.
Given that the gun control laws will limit the number of people who have guns, but at the same time just like drugs the guns will still find its way into the hands of the criminals. This shows that the people championing for the establishment of a tougher law to control the flow of guns are protecting the criminals while exposing the citizens who law are abiding to danger. . (William eta’l’ 1990 Page 221- 297) The perception that the many people have about violence and guns is not the correct perception. Firearms do not contribute to the increased rates of violence and crime.
