Hope Shaw B-1 Lincolns Assassination Abraham Lincoln was busy. He had a big job ahead of him. The war had finally come to a close, but what of the south. It seemed only he was prepared to forgive. His wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, wanted to see a play. She believed it might even let him relax. Abraham Lincoln did not believe this, but wished to make his wife happy. She suggested a comedy, so Lincoln, who disliked humorous shows, agreed for his wife’s sake. One of the nights before the play, Lincoln had a dream of an assassination, HIS assassination! He thought this was ridiculous, yet he shared his dream with his loving wife, who, out of concern, wished to cancel their trip to the theater. Lincoln insisted that it was a fluke. Lincoln’s bodyguard, Stanton, worried for his employer as well. Harsh feelings could bring up the incentive to kill the famous president. Stanton could imagine it as the rebels ace in the hole, a way to turn the tables. Lincoln’s presence in the theater was advertised, so it had been filled with people. He was tracked down and shot. Some say the police did the shooting, others say it was suicide. Either way Booth died, along with any explanations or answers. It was the worst move possible to have made for the south. They believe that they could change things, yet this effect of war killed off the south’s only sympathizer. Life was to be made harder for acceptance, people acted still as if they were two different countries. No one forgot Abraham Lincoln. He paved our way to victory and held the nation together.
