When Henry stated that independence was just a question of freedom or slavery, he added “…we can he to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country.” By doing so Henry causes the delegates to believe that it is part of their moral responsibility to gain independence from Britain. Later in in his address, Henry adds that they are not fighting their battles alone, but that “There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles with us.” When Henry says
Both Thomas Jefferson’s and Andrew Hamilton’s beliefs and views helped to shape the United States into the country it is today. Although both men had excellent intentions for the future of America, their desires for America and its government conflicted in numerous ways. One important conflict between Jefferson and Hamilton was their opinion on the type of government the United States should have. Jefferson felt that a government run by the majority would be the most ideal form of government. He says, “After all, it is my principle that the will of the Majority should always prevail.
Common Sense Government as Defined by Thomas Paine Common Sense – an influential pamphlet authored by Thomas Paine galvanized American colonists to seek independence from Great Britain and unite under a representative democratic republican government. At the time Common Sense was distributed, it was a commonly held belief amongst the colonists that the English Constitution and British monarchy were the sources of political authority to which they were bound. Thus, even though colonists were frustrated and angered by the taxation and authority being exerted over them by the royal monarchy, to most colonists, at the outset it made “common sense” to obey the British monarchy and seek reconciliation, as opposed to separation. However, in Thomas Paine’s view it made “common sense” for the colonists to reject the widely accepted political notion of monarchy and to embrace a representative democratic government. With intent, he titled his pamphlet Common Sense, and
Paine believed in American secession from the British and an independent country of their own. Thomas Paine encourages breaking away from Great Britain to start colonial independence. He uses examples in many different categories such as taxes, religion, and the cons of the British government to support his thesis. Thomas Paine’s main argument in Common Sense is that every man is created equal and should be given
Sam Brockie November 9, 2009 Period 6 Being an American Essay The most important civic value an American citizen should have is responsibility. If our citizens did not have responsibility then America would be plunged into anarchy and chaos. One must possess responsibility and self control if one is to have such freedoms as guaranteed to every American. Responsibility is so important to being an American because the government cannot have complete control over us. If citizens are to be entrusted with such cherished personal freedoms as guaranteed in the constitution, then they must have the responsibility to obey the law and to be productive, lest their freedoms be taken away.
They must pay taxes, vote in elections, and serve their country whether at home or abroad. They must be accepting of all religions, ethnicities and personal morals. First, an American has the right to speak their mind, which is freedom of speech. This freedom helps us serve our country, an American stands up for what is right and just. As Ghandi said "A "no" uttered from the deepest conviction is better and greater then a "yes" uttered to please, or what is worse, to avoid trouble."
Aguilar, Geddely IB History of the Americas May 1, 2014 As Abraham Lincoln once stated, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falta and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” The struggle for equality began with America fighting against Britain to obtain liberty and justice for all. In the American Revolution as well as in the Civil Rights Movement there were people of two different beliefs. Some believed in the philosophy of reaching their purpose without any use of violence, were as in the other hand others were certain violence was the only way there was to obtain liberty. Even after being granted certain rights, American citizens still suffered corruption, and segregation.
Washington talks to the people of the United States and tells them that he is not needed as president anymore and that the nation will do just fine without him as the leader. He believed that he was not qualified enough to take on the role of president. Washington strongly believed that the unity of the states will determine how well the nation does without him. He warned the people to look out for any evidence of suspicious things that would ruin the Union and would cause states to secede. People must believe they’re American’s and not just Texan’s or Iowan’s, meaning they need to fight for the country and not just for their state.
“Nevertheless, the American Dream is within reach for all those who aspire to it and are willing to put in the hours; Adams was articulating it as an attainable outcome, not as a pipe dream (Kamp). We just need to have a collision of the idea of what the American Dream really implies. Going from “what was the past is no longer the present” is a flawed way of thinking in this interpretation. We need to go back to our Founding Father’s principles and revisit our four Declaration of Independence fundamentals. Our country needs to offer encouragement and exhibit faith rather than stripping the Americans of confidence.
The constitution contains our unalienable rights that protects us from government. The bill of rights spell out for every american what they can do within the realm of their freedom. Our constitution is our structure. The three branches of government and the checks and balances are all still fundamental in the running of america. But there are outdated sections of it that need to be reguvinated, that need to be discussed for the betterment of our government. It need to declare issues like heathcare and an economic plan so that the country can have a clear path to walk through. It seems like america is too proud to let go of its constitution, it has become a historical trophy for our government that sits and collects dust.We must re-draft the constitution, keeping some fundamental sections but reforming parts that no longer are important, and to add sections that have become a part of america. The action of even questioning the relevance of the constitution, shows the old and non functional nature of the constitution.
