Looking Backward In Looking Backward, Edward Bellamy argues that monopolies running the American economy was one of the most significant problems in 1887. It was Bellamy’s belief that small independent businesses would not have the ability to succeed due in part to corporate monopolies running them out of business, or just buying them out. He gave an example of the railroads being slowly brought up until,“a few great syndicates controlled every rail in the land.” Bellamy’s opinion was that the monopolies were able to take advantage of their customers and small business owners because they had too much control of the markets. (34-38) Edward Bellamy criticizes the American government system because of the corruption present behind their curtains.
Elizabethian time was the Era of superstition to say the least. In the most the common setting, superstition played a factor in civilian’s everyday lives. Elizabethians believed that physically saying “god bless you” following a sneeze would prevent the devil from entering your body when opening your mouth. Other superstitions such as having your shoes on a table, having hold of a peacock feather, passing by a black cat, and spilling table salt or pepper were also considered to be bad luck. Women in the kitchen believed it was unlucky to stir the pot counterclockwise while cooking.

What a lot of people don’t know is that outsourcing is a much older practice. Merchant companies or large businesses can cut their material cost and employee labor considerably by outsourcing. This has made the big corporations close their factories in the U.S and move them overseas to undeveloped countries. The citizens of these countries will work for lower wages, in dangerous conditions and have fewer restrictions as far as labor rights.
US Taxation System is Unfair to Ordinary Workers Kesha Krider Devry University Does anyone find it hard to shake the feeling that the wealthy have ways of hanging on to more of their money, while year after year the middle class dutifully hand over their hard earned money to our abominable tax system? It is past time to overhaul the way we pay for the services that our government provides for us in the United States. The current system of multiple taxes, when considered as a whole, is grossly unfair to ordinary workers. Two major points to acknowledge about the unfairness is the fact that middle class workers have no representation or knowledge of the establishments of laws and the dreaded burden of continuous tax hikes. The federal, state and local tax systems in the United States have been marked by significant changes over the years in response to changing circumstances and changes in the role of government.
This article was very interesting to read because counting, a simple and menial task for us is quite different for the indigenous people. This article brought awareness to how different our societies are. I was aware of the difference in technology and beliefs, but I never thought of the number system. I found it very interesting to see how counting can be different between cultures like our own and the indigenous people. I also found it interesting to learn how the lifestyles influence different beliefs like the number system.
