Race versus Hockey In any sport, professional or not, there will always be those who considered the “other”. In the world of hockey, black players are perceived as that other, or outsider due to the low number of them in the sport. Especially in the National Hockey league (NHL), which is predominantly white, the few black players receive racial gestures and slurs from fans, media, other players etc. As more and more black players play in the NHL, the incidents of racism continue to grow. Players such as Wayne Simmonds, Evander Kane, Kevin Weekes, among others have all been subject to racial gestures and slurs of late. It is the people watching and supporting the game live or at home or at bars who make the most and the worst comments to the few black players of the NHL and hockey. Yet this is not a local problem centered around the NHL, it is a worldwide problem as well. During this season’s partial lockout, many players headed overseas to Europe to play hockey. Wayne Simmonds headed to the Czech Republic, where once again, he could not escape the racism. During a game, the fans started chanting, “opice”, which translates to monkey. Simmonds was quoted as saying, “I was just thinking; Again?” (Feschuk, 2012). That is not the only time the fans have attacked Simmonds, as a fan threw a banana peel at him during a shootout attempt (MacKinnon, 2011). Verbal racial slurs and live gestures at games are not the only forms these incidents come in. Nowadays with social media being so heavily relied on and important, twitter also has a large role to play in this racism issue. Last season, the Washington Capitals eliminated the Boston Bruins in overtime. The game winning goal was scored by Joel Ward, one of the NHL’s few black players. Instantly, the racist comments on twitter blew up, “Stupid n***** go play basketball, hockey is a white sport”, or, “of all people to score it had to be the n*****” (Silverman, 2013).
