Bruce Price What is a Leader? What makes someone a leader? What is it about being a leader that some people understand and makes them believe in that person? Everyone knows a leader is someone who leads others, but why do people follow that one person? I consider a leader to be a person with a vision, but also to have certain traits such as confidence, salesmanship, empowering, and self-awareness. A leader’s vision can be to achieve a dream, goal, or simply a small/large objective for the day. Dreams take time and the ability to trust others to achieve. A goal could be something reachable at the end of a few days, weeks, or months. Objectives usually can be accomplished in a day or even less time. With this vision, a leader must have the traits talked about above to have an opportunity to succeed. In the workplace, leaders must be confident in themselves and in others who they are working with. If a leader doesn’t have confidence and belief in themself, nobody else will. Having confidence in yourself makes others believe in you and your vision. Leaders must also have confidence and belief in others to initiate the leader’s planned steps to work towards their vision. Moving forward in the right direction can be difficult, which is why a leader that has confidence must have salesmanship. Great business’ leaders are able to sell and persuade others of their vision without looking arrogant, and therefore, lead to all members of the team to be engaged in the plan. True leaders must empower the individuals under them to use their strengths to help reach the target goal. Nobody is the best at everything and a leader that empowers others is the first part of having self-awareness.
