But to get there, we cannot stand still.” President Obama, January 25, 2011 Immigration Reform In evaluating the pros and cons of immigration reform, legalization program, it is important to keep in mind that legalization is not only a humanitarian act; it is also a form of economic stimulus. There are 11 million undocumented people living in the shadows, this is neither good for the economy or the country. We need to encourage them to come out of the shadows so they can pay their taxes and play by the same rules as everyone else. Innocent young people brought to the country through no fault of their own by their parents will be given a chance to earn their citizenship more quickly if they serve in the military or pursue higher education. The country as a whole would benefit from a sizable increase in GDP and income and a modest increase in jobs. The earnings of unauthorized immigrants would rise significantly, and the taxes they would pay would increase dramatically. Given that the full benefits would phase in over a number of years, the sooner we grant legal status and provide a road map to citizenship to unauthorized immigrants, the sooner Americans will be able to reap these benefits. It is also clear that legalization and a road map to citizenship bestow greater gains on the American people and the U.S. economy than legalization
