However, the story of Jacob Jankowski is not one shy of tragedy and misfortune. Water for Elephants is filled with acts of loyalty, betrayal, and romance to convey Gruen’s purpose to show how one’s moral compass and self worth are tested throughout life. Gruen uses the circus’s beauty and majesty to contrast the harsh conditions that go on behind the scenes of the big top. The main being abuse.
In the book "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen we are confronted with a character named August who acts as the antagonist to the lovers and the circus workers. While August seems to have a charming, gentle and inviting side to him, it is far more likely you will catch him in a fit of rage beating his wife, abusing an animal, or treating the people around him like trash. Throughout the story his actions are dismissed by excuses that he has a medical condition that causes his rage-filled, paranoid schizophrenic actions, but soon even these excuses will not hide what is ultimately true character. His anger driven actions are responsible for his unpleasant demise and no amount of outward charm can cover up the beast in his soul. We can evaluate his true character based on three points, the way he treated the circus animals, the way he treated the people around him, and most notably the way he treated his wife Marlena.
