Effects of Video-Based Group Instruction for Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder Lynette Baldwin HMS 141/DO1N August 29, 2013 Abstract This article explains how video modeling was used to improve the social skills of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Qualitative impairment in social interaction is one of the defining characteristics of individuals diagnosed with autism. This impairment can be especially challenging for adolescents as demands of social interaction increase in difficulty. Autism spectrum disorders (which we will refer to as ASDs) are a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. People with ASDs handle information in their brain differently than other people. ASDs are "spectrum disorders." That means ASDs affect each person in different ways. People with ASDs share some similar symptoms, such as problems with social interaction. Visually based instruction such as video modeling, a research supported intervention, is believed to be more appropriate and effective than other approaches for adolescents with ASD for numerous reasons. For one, adolescents with ASD are visual learners, which mean they learn by visual means. The participants were seated at table and chairs placed in the center of the room, as well as tables and chairs on the opposite side of the room for one-on-one interaction for the participants. A camera set up to monitor activity. There were also facilitators in the room to observe and record data and to create textual prompts for the participants to read during group sessions. The first step of video modeling was to identify target skills such as assessment, listing and prioritizing skills, and collecting baseline data by creating 3 to 5 scripts to be used for skills that required verbalization, for example, greeting others, inviting peers to join in an activity, offering assistance and maintaining a give and take
