“How are Victor and the Creature’s quest for justice viewed by each other and what type of injustice do they themselves serve?” The novel, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, portrays a motif of justice within the characters, specifically Victor and his monster. These two major characters of this piece of literature, are on a quest for what they believe is justice. However, both of these characters do not consider what the other is doing to be justice. Although each of these characters are on their own quest for justice, they long for justice to punish them for their actions. The conclusion of Victor Frankenstein’s experiment led to the creation of a demonic creature who had freedom within the world. The monster escapes upon his rise and disappears…show more content…
After being driven away by humans he had come across a hovel next to a cottage. From his hovel he could witness the everyday activities that went on inside the cottage through a crack in the boards. Here he learned about human society, language, and gained an extended education through the history books that he read. After finding Victor’s research notes in his jacket pocket, the creature learns of the disgust his own creator had when building him. Thus realizing how his creator’s abandonment caused a large impact on his life as he had to learn to survive without the aid of a teacher and had no protection from the cruelties that were associated with humanity and loneliness. After meeting a relative of Victor, the creature strangles him while going through a fit of rage because he was associated with the man who caused his suffering. In his eyes, what the creature did to the boy and Victor’s family was fair and justified after all the torture that Victor caused him. The creature’s quest for justice fully begins after Victor breaks the promise that the two of them made for the construction of a mate in exchange for the monster’s isolation from society. The creature then ignites a killing spree against the Frankenstein name by murdering Victor’s family and friends until he is just as alone as he is. However, much like Victor, the creature feels sorrow and guilt towards himself. After being forced away from the cottagers and realizing he will never be able to fully integrate in society, he begins to question why he was brought into this world, “ Why did I live? Why...did I not extinguish the spark of existence which you had...bestowed? (Shelly 97) The creature feels just being alive is serving an injustice to society but becomes too involved with his mission of justice against
