Urbanization and population changes in Kelowna (1996 – 2011) Gao shu yuan (Student #: 13388129) Geography 128 Carlos Teixeira The University of British Columbia February 13, 2014 By taking an overall look at the population geography in the City of Kelowna between the years 1996 and 2011, personally, the City of Kelowna is a community in transition. Kelowna, defined as a mid-size city in the province of British Columbia, has been developing rapidly. The population has been rising from 20,000 to 117,312 during last three decades (Statistics Canada, 2011). The other main factor influences the distribution is the availability of affordable housing. As an international student, I have done lots of research on the housing rental. Comparing the similar type of condos located around UBCO, OC, and downtown Kelowna in the same period, the prices at most differ by 150 hundreds. The cause of this difference mainly comes from the age of the condo but not the location. There is one exception, however, the new building in UBCO may not be a good choice for students due to its high rental price. Yet, the new building deserves the high price. It attracts the students with the perfect location, two minutes walk to campus, and the fascinating facilities, brand new furniture. Generally, people tend to live in a quiet and safe community, which has easy approach to the working/studying places. To make the life easier, I prefer the housing near bus loop and have less
