Gardening has always been a part of my life. From the time that I was able to walk, I feel as if my mother put me to work in one of our huge vegetable gardens in the backyard. This might be a slight exaggeration, but as a child forced to weed while other kids were able to ride their Big Wheels up and down the street all summer as they pleased, it seemed a torturous, abhorrent chore. Whether it was weeding or to simply collect and snap green beans, gardening was a huge part of my family’s life, and therefore, my life from a very early age. It wasn’t until I was a few years older that I began to truly appreciate just how wonderful and satisfying gardening was. You know the difference between a home grown tomato and a store bought tomato? There might not be a finer treat on this earth than a few shakes of salt on a delicious, sun ripened tomato, freshly picked from you own vegetable garden. So as an adult apartment dweller, my number one priority during apartment searches was having outdoor space. It didn’t have to be a large space, just something that had some sun exposure, so I could continue to cultivate my love of gardening, without the luxury of a yard. Urban patio gardening is a wondrous activity that achieves the perfect balance of a therapeutic hobby with the added benefit of growing your own food. When beginning an urban garden, you must first ask yourself what it is that you would like out of your garden. Would you like to plant flowers, herbs, vegetables, or a combination of all three? Flowers are obviously beautiful to look at and may even attract a hummingbird or two if you select the right ones. Flowers and herbs are fairly foolproof, so if you are new to gardening, you might want to limit yourself to these two.
