Colon Cancer Risk Assessment Steven L. McClain SCI/162 December 17, 2011 Jessica Broome Colon Cancer Risk Assessment Colon cancer also known as colorectal cancer is cancer of large intestine, which is the lower part of the digestive system. Colon cancer usually begins as small non-cancerous bumps (adenomatous polyps) and over time can become cancerous. According to the Center for Disease Control (2010)“Of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and the third most common cancer in men and in women.” Also the Center for Disease Control states that “the risk of getting colorectal cancer increases with age and is greater in men than in women.” (Center for Disease Control, 2010). The following information was retrieved from the Mayo Clinic Some signs of colon cancer are: • A change in bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation. • Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool.
The first is squamous cell, which accounts for an outstanding 80-90% of all cervical cancer cases. Then there are adenocarcinomas, which accounts for a 10-20% of the cervical cancer cases (Shinn, 2004, p38). Cervical cancer is highly treatable if caught at an early stage. “But once cancer spreads to the lymphatic system or parametrial tissues adjacent to the cervix, treating it successfully becomes more difficult” (Shinn, 2004, p. 38). Sexual exposure to the sexually transmitted infection HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is one of the most common causes of cervical cancer.
Some causes of cancer can be prevented while others cannot. There are also hereditary cancers. The number one most common type of cancer is skin cancer. The second most common is prostate cancer (Prostate cancer, 2008). "The purpose of this study is to investigate the fatal cancer rate among Law Enforcement personnel".
Title: Reflective writing of the advances of treatment of cancer. Cancer is a disease arises mainly from mutation in certain sequences of a gene. Cases of cancers are reported from all parts of the world, accounting roughly about 13% of death each year. In Hong Kong alone it is accounted for almost 30% of death and it is still increasing. Cancer can be a fast developing disease, it is also extremely fatal if not diagnosed in time and not treated properly.
Causes and effects of lung cancer and breast cancer Cancer can be defined as a disease resulting from uncontrolled growth of normal cells. Uncontrolled cells cause a mass called a tumour. There are up to 200 forms of cancer as there are over 200 several kinds of body cells (Institute of Cancer Research in the UK. 2013). Jamal et al (2011) studied the number of fatal cases of cancer and he found that, breast cancer in females and lung cancer in men kill many people in both developed and non-developing countries.
After researching the 10 leading causes of death in the United states, I discovered that they were heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, stroke, accidents, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, nephritis and suicide. Heart disease being the leading cause of death is surprising to me because that is an illness that can relatively be controlled. Heart disease can be caused by unhealthy diet, smoking, lack of exercise and being overweight. Since this is known to everyone that heart disease is a huge risk, it's surprising that more people so not take more action to reduce this risk. In my opinion, a disease that can be controlled by just keeping yourself healthy, should not be a leading cause of death.
Skin cancer that forms in squamous cells is called squamos cell carcinoma. Skin cancer that forms in neuroendocrine cells is called neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin. The most common skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Over one million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every year.
Papillary thyroid cancer. The papillary type of thyroid cancer is the most common, making up about 80 percent of all thyroid cancer diagnoses. -usually discovered when a thyroid nodule appears on the neck. -metastasize to cervical lymph nodes (lymph nodes filter out harmful substances) d. Follicular thyroid cancer. Follicular thyroid cancer also includes Hurthle cell cancer.
Other cancer cells can metastasize on different parts of the body through blood and can form a new tumor. Genetic changes are one cause of cancer, which can be inherited from parents or damaged to DNA. Exposure to chemicals such as radiations and smoking, may cause damage to cells. A person's cancer comes with unique genetic changes as it grows there will be changes to it. To know the correct procedure for care of cancer as discuss in this essay, it will also involve the diagnosis and staging of cancer, complications of cancer, its side effects and ways to cope up, as well as psychological effects and physical.
Polyps are “small growths in the lining of the colon and rectum” (Lahey Clinic). These polyps can, over time, grow larger and may potentially develop into cancer. Colorectal cancer can occur at any point during one’s life, but the risk of developing this type of cancer increases with age. There are many risk factors associated with the development of colorectal cancer. These risk factors include: “family history of colorectal cancer, family history of colon polyps, personal history of colon polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, or previous cancers” (Lahey Clinic).
