Skin Cancer A basic description of skin cancer is cancer that forms in the tissues of the skin. There is several types of skin cancer. Skin cancer that is in melanocytes is called melanoma. Skin cancer that forms in the lower part of the epidermis is called basal cell carcinoma. Skin cancer that forms in squamous cells is called squamos cell carcinoma. Skin cancer that forms in neuroendocrine cells is called neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin. The most common skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Over one million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every year. There is many causes of skin cancer. One main cause is ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun. Tanning in a tanning bed is another form of UV radiation to cause skin cancer. Some other factors that contribute to skin cancer is multiple moles, exposure to coal and arsenic compounds, and scars from disease and burns. One symptom of skin cancer is Basal cell carcinoma that usually occurs in your face, ears, or scalp. Basal cell carcinoma appears as a pearly or wavy bump, or a flat, flesh-colored or brown scar-like lesion. Another symptom is squamos cell carcinoma occurs on sun-exposed areas of your body, face, lips, ears, and hands. It appears as a firm, red nodule, or a flat lesion with a scaly, crusted surface. There is many ways to treat a Basal cell carcinoma with a good chance of success of 90% or more. The doctor’s main goal is to remove or destroy the cancer completely with as small a scar as possible. The doctor considers location, size, risk of scarring, and the person’s age, general health, and medical history. In conclusion I did my research paper on skin cancer. Specifically I did basal cell carcinoma cancer. I talked about the symptoms, causes, and treatments to this cancer. References:
