Unit 205 – Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings. Outcome One 1.1 Duty of care means having the main responsibility of caring for someone else, it may be someone who is too young, too old, too ill, or unfit mentally to care for themselves. It sometimes includes taking actions for their best interest, and assisting the person's hygiene, safety, meals, transportation, and other medical or physical needs in a way which will not be detrimental to the health, safety and wellbeing of that person. It could also include staff falling out, breaking confidentiality, swearing and behaviour, absent staff members and lack of team work. 1.2 The duty of care affects my work role on a day to day basis, I have to prioritise and often make decisions for client’s best interest. I must always carry out my duties that are in my job description. I follow procedure and provide a standard of care in line with the principle codes of practice in all aspect. I make have access to all resources and equipment that may assist me, and if I don’t I ask my manager. I observe confidentiality at all times, I observe and make sure I update my knowledge and skills on a regular basis; I understand the importance and have the confidence to air concerns, which may be delicate and involve not only work colleagues, but also people I support. Outcome Two 2.1 A dilemma may arise between the duty of care and an individual’s rights when the basic human rights and freedoms of the individual are put to challenge, this could be mental capacity against a care plan or risk assessment, or giving the individual a choice, but at the same time understanding the need to keep the individual safe. 2.2 To get additional support and advice about how to resolve such dilemmas you can seek advice from colleagues, the individuals family + friends, GP,
