Many Americans think that safety is important and are willing to give up their civil liberties and first amendment rights; but then where does it stop? If the government is allowed to do whatever they want under the guise of combating terror, then America will surely cease to be a democratic republic. In the book “The Dark Side” written by Jane Mayer, it is stated that some in the extreme right wing of the Republican Party believe that there are too many civil liberties and too many checks and balances against the Executive Branch and that these should be removed (Mayer, 2008, p. 6). The “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism” Act of 2001 (USA PATRIOT act), that was enacted after 9/11, has many sections that take away the rights of Americans, most of which were probably never even read by the members of congress. One of the many horrors that this act allows is the legality of the law enforcement to acquire and view e-mails sent via the World Wide Web as well as phone numbers that you have dialed without first informing you or without obtaining a court order.
Terrorists are extremists who believe that they are supposed to hurt a certain group of people because their god or someone that they obey and respect told them that this is the right thing to do because that group is a possible threat to themselves or their religion so they want to take them out before the people group can hurt them. There are also more reasons why terrorists attack but this is one of the main reasons. Since 9/11 has happened, these beliefs and practices have not stopped or disappeared. If anything they have strengthened and become more dangerous than they were before. Since this is a great possibility, terrorist extremists may have become more extreme in their tactic than they were before 9/11 happened.
Many people believe we invaded Iraq for the wrong reasons and I would have to agree. I do not think we invaded because we truly felt like we protecting the people in Iraq or trying to prevent future attacks. I believe we had our own political and economic agenda for invading. People will argue that we were attacked and we needed to defend ourselves. I would argue that we did not exhaust every possible scenario before we entered with violence.
By understanding terrorist groups, society can evade much violence and can save many innocent lives. One positive purpose in developing an ability to understand and articulate views one disagrees with can serve in our society to understand different types of society better. Every society has it owns religions and actions. In order to differentiate the positive and negative parts from each society helps us to accept different acts and to see the society as a
Working thesis: I believe that using technology would make us a better person and we can live a better life. 3. Angle: I would stand up and talk about the positive and negative about technology and whether we as youngster fall into social isolation. The adult only think of the negative they think that technology makes them social isolation. But the youngster, only think about the positives.
The country, just like in the 1950’s – nearly 60 years prior was, and is sold on fear. However in this decade there isn’t a new “McCarthy” – one man is not needed to stimulate accusations and distrust as this fear is not against just anyone, but rather focused on specific ethnic groups. The terrorist scare of present times shares the same qualities and traits as the communist scare of the 50’s and the resulting effects on historian thought. Both are an overblown paranoia against a specific group of individuals causing much havoc and fear. Out of this fear comes the resulting philosophy or thought process of historians – a new pro-American, less critical view of the
It feeds off our vulnerabilities and is suffocating our society. If we do not find an antidote to eradicate this ever-spreading disease, it could well inflict irreparable damage on us, if it has not done so already. It is, for the most part, our choice what we see and hear, so please take it upon yourself to avoid this fear-mongering, insecurity-breeding nonsense. You are fine the way you are and you do not need the ‘next big
America has been hijacked and the people manipulated and controlled with fear. Political dissent is tantamount to treason and free speech is relegated to 'free speech zones' far away from political candidates. Whilst all of this is happening around us, the people are stuck on the impression that threats to security are merely military threats from outside sources and fail to comprehend the danger of these terrorizations brought on by our own government within our own borders. More specifically, the Patriot Act blatantly tramples on the Bill of Rights yet is tolerated and even supported by the majority of Americans as a necessary evil against terrorism. In this sense Ullman’s notion of the transaction between liberty and security is very tangible today (Ullman,
One can avoid conflict by stating their mind - by just not joining in the event one thinks is trouble. When someone does, however, something is bound to erupt. Whether it's injury or even death, it WILL happen. Randy states, "He's dead - his mother has had a nervous breakdown" (116). Fighting can not only kill, but the affect can spread to other people, much like a pandemic.
Illegal immigration takes place over the world; the main reason is because people want to have a better life, hell, even a chance at life itself. Granted, some legally because of extenuating circumstances. Who are we to take away their dream? If they’re willing to go through the steps to become lawful residents, then by all means, let them have a chance. We must take into account the reason why they take this major journey and what they sacrifice.
