How does Steinbeck use the opening setting to engage the reader? ‘Of Mice and Men’ was published in 1937 and was written by John Steinbeck. He drew some of his ideas from his work experiences (manual and unskilled) whilst supporting himself through college. His circular novella follows the lives of George Milton and Lennie Small who were two itinerant workers searching for jobs during the ‘Great American Depression’ of the 1930’s. Life was very hard during this time so people had to find work where they could, however low paid.
The lesson learned in this novel is quoted directly in the book, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” This story takes place during the Great Depression in a town called Maycomb, Alabama. The narrarator, Scout Finch, lives with her older brother Jem and their widowed father Atticus. Boo Radley is a neighbor of the Finches. Jem, Scout, and Dill, a friend, let their imaginations run wild with thoughts of Boo. The children have been terrified and fascinated with their neighbor.

Later, it is clear that Greg and Rodrick are always broke, so Mom starts a "Mom Bucks" program. Rodrick, at first, mismanages the money on his magazines, while Greg carefully manages the cash. Rodrick has an upcoming science project, and tells it that he would prefer to do it on 'Gravity', but clearly shows no effort, and asks his family members to do it for him.

This situation is repeated when Candy walks pass looking for Lennie and expresses to Lennie “this is the first time I ever been in his room”, which triggers Crook to invite him in too as he follows on to say “You can come in if you want”. The sense of eagerness is repeated which shows he longs for company which is further hinted as he says “A guy goes nuts if he’s lonely.” Loneliness and Isolation is something Crooks is used to, structurally speaking, section 4 starts and ends by Crooks rubbing oil on his back, alone. The sense of isolation is emphasized with the fact that throughout the whole book of Of Mice and Men there is only one section on Crooks, and the whole section focuses on him which brings up awareness of segregation which was at its peak at the time towards black
