Teaching Students with Traumatic Brain Injuries Mike Willis Grand Canyon University: EED 358 September 7, 2013 Teaching Students with Traumatic Brain Injuries Ready, Set, Hut, Hut! Not until recently there was a lot of discussion with people that were diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). TBI occurs when there is an injury to the head that is so strong that is causes damage to the brain. It can also occur if shaken way too hard. This condition has been discussed more frequently since a lot of NFL players has been diagnosed with this due to constant aggravation to the brain on the field due to constant tackling. According to IDEA, “Traumatic Brain Injuries is the injury to the brain caused by an external physical force, resulting in total or partial functional disability or psychosocial impairment” that affects a student’s educational accomplishments (Cave, 2004). When a student has TBI, it will affect how they think, therefore the teacher must be prepared on a variety of strategies based on the student’s individual learning ability and their learning style. The student also will have a change in their cognition as well as their behavior, so it is not easily stated that two students will display the same characteristics even though the diagnosis is the same. There are three levels of TBI: mild, moderate, and severe. There is a test that measures the severity of TBI called Glasgow Coma Test (GCT). The milder case would be a concussion, however the worst level is severe and that is when TBI is diagnosed. Students that has TBI will have a number of symptoms that varied from case to case. The student might have motor development problems that include but not limited to, coordination and walking. Another common issue might be their language and cognitive skills. Problems with their speech, understanding words, talking problem solving, memory, attention, problem solving, and judgment can all be affected by TBI. These students might also have a hard time staying focused and might be disorganized in their work and/or thoughts. Behavioral problems is also a common symptom of TBI.
