How many of y’all watch the exciting NFL football games on Sunday? Don’t you love seeing the hard hits, touchdown dances, and the upsets when the underdog team beats the “better team”? Well 64% of Americans watch NFL football games every weekend (“No Surprise”). Here lately the NFL isn’t known for the great games, great teams, or even great players. They are specifically known for the off the field violence that’s been going on the past few months. In the past few months domestic violence has been an ongoing issue with certain NFL players and Roger Goodell the NFL’s commissioner. The 49ers defensive end Ray McDonald, arrested August 31, 2014 but has not been charged or disciplined by the NFL ("49ers' Ray McDonald Faces Domestic Violence Charge”). Just days before McDonald’s arrest the NFL imposed a strict new policy on domestic violence. The violation comes with a six game suspension for the first offense; for the second offense it comes with a lifetime ban from the NFL ("NFL toughens domestic violence stance"). McDonald is under investigation for serious charges from San Diego police. McDonald was having a birthday party on Saturday the night of August 30th when police was called by his fiancé. His fiancé who is pregnant had bruises around her neck and arms when the police had arrived. McDonald was arrested but was out on bail in less than 24 hours. He got to travel the next weekend to play in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. There has been a lot of criticism going on about the NFL not being strict on players involved in domestic violence. People believe that Roger Goodell had seen the full video of Ray Rice before it was released by TMZ, and they want to know why it’s taking so long for the NFL to punish these players. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell admits to his own missteps and admitted that he needs assistance in overseeing the league’s personal conduct policy. With all the criticism going on with the NFL and the domestic violence problems they are now trying to win the fans and media back on their side by partnering with the National Domestic Violence Hotline. On September 19th the commissioner has also said, “Within the next 30 days, all NFL teams and personnel will participate in education sessions on domestic violence and sexual assault.” ("NFL toughens domestic violence stance.") Within these past few months the NFL has been dealing with domestic violence scandals from players around the league. These players attract numerous amounts of attention when they are doing wrong, therefore the NFL does not want to get a bad reputation for what has been going on these past few months.
