"Support groups and self-help groups are structured for the purpose of providing patients with the opportunity to maintain or enhance personal and social functioning through cooperation and shared understanding of life's challenges" (Hayes et al., 2006; Yalom & Leszcz, 2005). The person who was delegating the groups were previous addicts who have been sober for some time. A better relationship begins because they can relate to the other members. In the Alcoholics Anonymous support group, two coins were given to sobriety, a three month and a nine month. These are great personal achievements for the member to accomplish and it takes motivation, determination, and support.
Katie Sterry December 4, 2012 ANTY 435: Book Review Introduction Many scholars have devoted their life’s work to studying drug use in various cultures. Two such scholars are ethnographic authors Catherine J. Allen and Philippe Bourgois. These two individuals each spent several years living in extremely different communities to study the lives and practices of their inhabitants. Allen performed her fieldwork in the Andean community of Sonqo and published her book, “The Hold Life Has: Coca and Cultural Identity in an Andean Community,” in 2002. Bourgois chose to inhabit New York City’s impoverished East Harlem, also called “El Barrio,” for several years and in 2003 published his book, “In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio.” While both Allen and Bourgois lived in their respective communities in the late 1980s, the settings of their fieldwork allowed them to produce two very different bodies of work.
There are many similarities between an outpatient treatment program and an inpatient treatment center, but the difference is important for a person’s recovery. How does a person choose which treatment is best for them? Treatment has to be tailored to an individual’s needs and specific circumstances. Addicts can learn how to live without using drugs and alcohol, and keep control of their own life, it’s like having a disease in remission, a person with diabetes or cancer has to take medicine to keep their disease under control, so does an addict. They are required to follow daily living techniques that keep them focused on living a clean and sober life, and surround themselves with a sober and recovering community.

In a sense the goal of the 12 step program goes behold just abstaining from drinking alcohol. It aims at bringing about change in the thinking pattern of the alcoholic "to bring about recovery from alcoholism through a spiritual awakening. A spiritual awakening is achieved by taking the Twelve Steps”, and sobriety is furthered by volunteering for AA and regular attendance at AA meetings or contact with AA members.Members were encouraged to find an experienced fellow alcoholic, called a sponsor, to help them understand and follow the AA program. For a sponsor, preference is given to someone who has had experience with 12 step program, of the same sex and is unlikely to impose personal views on the one been sponsored. Following the helper therapy principle, sponsors in AA benefit as much, if not more, form forming their relationship than do those they sponsor.
With the needle exchange program across the globe, addicts are able to receive a clean needle for every used one they turn in, thus limiting careless or dangerous disposal of needles. It prevents innocent members from our society from being accidentally stuck with dirty needles or syringes, which were improper, disposed of. I know that most members of our society would not want to be associated with a person who was diagnosed with HIV / AIDS and Hepatic C. There is absolvely no denial that there are individuals living in our community who use needles and syringes to treat their medical conditions and or to inject illegal drugs. If you or a member of you family work as a doctor, nurse, medical assistant, waste haulers, recycling plant workers, janitor, housekeeper, and sewage treatment worker all of us could possible experience needlestick injuries; when used needles are improperly disposed of safely. Let not forget about the most precious commodities our children, Members of the general public, including children, can also be exposed.

I am glad I had the opportunity to attend this meeting. I feel hearing this type group will aid me to help better understand and help my patients when they may need help that I may guide and encourage them to attend meetings like
