Name; Erica Backeberg Student No 552-365-6 TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE SETTING EVIDENCE INTRODUCTION I was introduced to Narcotics Anonymous through Eden Recovery Centre, a rehabilitation centre situated in the north of Johannesburg after a family member was admitted for drug addiction. ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE Narcotics Anonymous (NA) was established in the 1940’s in California and has spread worldwide. It made its appearance in South Africa in the 1980’s and meetings are held on a weekly basis in the various towns and cities. The non-profit organization was established to create a fellowship amongst men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem and the provide support for each other to stay clean. The main focus of the group is to aid in the recovery process by means of a support network , a case of addicts working with other addicts in order that they may share their experience with someone who has been through the same thing as them. NA encourages recovering addicts to lead a drug and alcohol free life by applying the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of NA and by cultivating a spiritual understanding of self. The main focus of NA is to provide recovering addicts with an environment where they can help each other to stop using drugs and to abstain from using any narcotics and alcohol. Because NA welcomes anyone who has a drug problem to the group, there is no initial “checking-in” with a counsellor or making appointments. Meetings are held weekly at various centres and they hold closed and open meetings. The closed meetings are for people struggling with addiction while the open meetings are for everyone else, including friends and family. The meetings follow a set form to ensure consistency. Only NA literature and tapes are used in NA meetings so that meetings held anywhere are the same. A recovering
