Up until starting high school I have been sheltered from the true character of the outside world. My parents didn’t want me to get hurt so they didn’t allow me to be in situations that were deemed unsafe. It really shocked me when people bullied and pressured me during elementary and middle school because of my weight and quiet nature. My mother told me to be indifferent towards them. Though her words were a bit comforting, I still did not understand why someone would be so cruel. That all changed once my father gave me ‘the Lords of the Rings’ by J.R.R. Tolkien for my half-birthday. Reading ‘the Lord of the Rings’ trilogy was absolutely enthralling. Tolkien wrote the trilogy as a form of entertainment as well as being a medium to express his own philosophies and opinions about life and human beings. I was immediately smitten with this literary work of art and all of the lessons it had to offer. The main plot of the whole story is that of the Ring of Power, created by the Dark Lord Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom, and of the choices each of the characters are presented with when in contact with the Ring: to accept, to reject, or to remain indifferent. When Tom puts on the Ring, nothing happens. My first thought about this was that Tom is too powerless for the Ring to work. However that turned out not to be the case since Tom was described as the “master of wood, water and hill”. Later, the book mentions that Tom “is his own master. But he cannot alter the Ring itself, nor break its powers over others.” The importance is in the fact that no human or object has any power over those who are their own masters.
