To what extent was the Cuban Revolution a success under Fidel Castro? Outline: Thesis: The Cuban Revolution under Fidel Castro was successful to a low extent Goals of Fidel Castro: * To end US dominance * To end Cuba’s monoculture economy * To redistribute wealth and improve standards of living Successes: * Ending US dominance via nationalization of US companies, bay of pigs and Cuban missile crisis * Counter: In turn relied on USSR * Social standard of living improved drastically * Universal education, healthcare * Equality no matter race or sex * Counter: standards of living did not improve a great deal * Immensely backwards * Not enough food for everyone * Basic necessities are still lacking Failures: * To end Cuba’s monoculture economy * Still highly dependent on sugar as main source of income * Cuba returned back to a condition that Castro denounced * Tourism as a main source of income * Prostitution sill prominent Historians: Mark Almond – Failed; Castro did not accomplish what he intended and Cuba returned to a Batista’s state Edwin Williamson – Failed; Slight economic improvement, but quickly deteriorated. Forced to implement capitalism, major national debt and was still reliant on sugar Burns – Successful; Cuba was better off that many LA countries w/ many social benefits and rights When Fidel Castro came into power, Cuba was already in a state of depression. Socially, Batista had left the citizens oppressed and exploited. Economically, Cuba became America’s playground and relied heavily on their monoculture of sugar. Politically, the government was corrupt as they used to receiving many benefits from Batista. Castro’s goals for the revolution were to rectify these issues.
