When Fidel Castro’s named is mentioned I think of an unjust dictator and an evil character. However, as research was done I learned many things from Castro that slightly changed my perception of him. Fidel, as the Cuban Revolution leader and former communist revolutionary, brought about development, progress and order to the Cuban community. Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born in August 13, 1926 on a sugar plantation in Birán, Oriente Province in Cuba. He was the third child born to Ángel Castro y Argiz, a Galician immigrant from the poor area of northwest of Spain who became somewhat rich through work in the sugar industry and successful investing.
The Cuban Embargo The Cuban Embargo began in 1959 by JFK while Cuba became communist. The reign of Castro put Cuba into a downward spiral which made once a beautiful country into a poor power abused piece of land. As Cuba separated itself from America we in the long run lost a good deal of close resources which equals money. I chose each book because they both show how both the embargo came into play and how we I have been effected along with what we've done with Cuba since. The difference between these books and many other is that it will give you more then just one example or point of view for the topic.
In 1958 and 1959 the communist revolutionary Fidel Castro overthrew Dictator Fulggencio Batista and establishes a socialist state aligned with the Soviet Union, abolishing capitalism and nationalizing foreign owned enterprises. Relationship with the United States of America deteriorated, with the demise of the Soviet Union in 1991, Cuba lost important financial backing, and its economy suffered greatly. The economy gradually began improving later in the 1990s with the encouragement of tourism and the legalization of small businesses and private employment. It is therefore clear as to why by the middle of the 20th century a socialist state had been established in Cuba, as Cuba was governed by a single-party rule or a dominant party rule of a communist party, and also she professed allegiance to a communist ideology as its guiding principle with allegiance with socialist state the Soviet Union. The revolutionary struggle in Cuba to overthrow the dominant elected capitalist government by its Commander in Chief Fulggencio Batista began in July 1953.
The U.S. placed this embargo as a force of punishment for poor judgment and acts against the U.S. and our people. The American government was hopeful this would force better political decisions into Cuba and cause them to be more humanitarian towards their citizens. Some critics have stated that the embargo has been helping Fidel and Raul Castro rather than changing them for the better. For instance, they are blaming all of Cuba’s issue on the embargo rather than accepting responsibility and fixing their mistakes. The critics are stating that not one Cuban citizen has been liberated and they more impoverished than
This does not seem like a commonwealth mentality. There have even been talks about turning Puerto Rico into a socialist Island. Which, again this would further damage the countries plan of independence. Although, socialism may be the way to go to assist in Puerto Rico recovery towards a better future, this can also back fire since many people can be forced to have health care and pay taxes. The problem with unemployment is that no one is spending money and putting the money back into the economy.
It is my belief the reason behind the US expanded the foreign policy to protect the interest of the American people and to restore some type of human treatment to Cuban people after the Spaniards treated them so inhuman in concentration camps. It is also my belief that the U.S. had their own agenda for monetary purposes to prosper from trade embargo. “It wasn’t so long ago when most Americans firmly rejected global adventurism,” stated Ries and Weber. It is to be believed that that Americans was following a traditional foreign policy of non-intervention as to not seem as though they were trying to take over foreign countries. This leads me to wonder why the U.S. decided to intervene in the Spanish War.
such as Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, China, and North Korea were communist’s states with the influence of the USSR having an impact; it could be argued that the crisis didn’t need to prove that containment had failed. The presidents after Truman attempted to uphold containment but did not succeed as well as they could have. Containment had failed as the crisis did not have enough commitment from Kennedy, therefore the policy and Truman’s doctrine had failed. The crisis ended with Cuba still being communist, the only real success for America was that the missiles had been removed, America did not need to remove their Jupiter missiles from Turkey and Castro was wary of Khrushchev; the actual fact that Cuba was still as communist state was not focused upon enough. Containment may have of failed and been made evident with the Cuban missile crisis however it led to a growing awareness of the need to create some control over the nuclear arms race by placing restrictions on nuclear tests.
The overthrow of Ferdinand Marcos was a victory for the U.S. as it lead to democratic elections in which Corazon Aquino was elected. The Bay of Pigs was a major success for the Soviet Union as the U.S. was embarrassed by the readiness of Fidel Castro’s men who quickly ended the invasion. The Cuban Missile crisis was a success for the U.S. as they were able to stop the Soviets from advancing and forced them to move their nuclear weapons out of Cuba. The Somoza overthrown in Nicaragua was a success for the Soviet Union as Sandinistas who overtook the thrown were communists. The Iran Contra affair was a major failure for the United
The truth is that biggest groups that come to the U.S. like Mexicans and El Salvadorians are because the U.S. occupied their country. In countries like the Dominican Republic the United States has always been intervening in its politics as well as its business market. The United States helped Trujillo stay in the control of the Dominican Republic. While Trujillo was in power many Dominicans suffered because under the Trujillo regime only those in favor of him were benefited. This at time when Franklin Roosevelt said that he was against dictatorships.
The influent company was named “El Pulpo” to image the impact it had on the Latin American economy. As soon as they were involved in the economic environment, politics connections started to be unavoidable. They created a situation where “Bananas Republics” had to cooperate in order to maintain their level of exportation and hard currency flow. Moreover bananas business was high demanding in capital and very risky too. The bananas plantations were located in distant areas and in the jungle.
