Just think if Spain still had control over Cuba and Hawaii, we would have to spend more money as a country to import sugar and pineapples. With America going to war with Spain and gaining control of Hawaii and Cuba these things are not taxed as much as they would have been. During the war however, many people in Spain and supporting Spain in the war, burnt the sugar cane fields and threatened the lives of many. People against the idea of imperialism were worried about the wars that it might entail and I cannot say that I blame them. With the Spanish American War happening because of the imperialism, this brought many people in America against the idea.
Upon his inauguration, Thomas Jefferson was eager to implement many of his Republican views into the government of the United States. Jefferson’s presidential service, however, turned out to be fairly contradictory to his original views. Jefferson was forced to alter his views for the good of the nation when presented with difficult situations, and he did not hesitate. One of Jefferson’s inconsistent but necessary philosophical moves was the enlargement of the naval fleet. The root of this decision lies in the pirate activity of the four African Barbary states (Document D).
The concept, referred to as "Dollar Diplomacy", called for the State Department to coordinate loans to the countries for infrastructure improvement from the largest banks in the U.S. Strategically, this was designed to strengthen security for the Panama Canal, increase American trade, and diminish the presence of European nations in the area. Progressives and Insurgent Republicans in the Senate opposed the Wall Street connection, so the effort was largely a failure. [69] The President was more successful in Argentina, where agreements were reached whereby the U.S. provided loans to enable Argentina to acquire battleships; some naval construction and design secrets were sacrificed in the
JFK also said, “It would make it more difficult for American goods to compete in foreign markets, more difficult to withstand competition from foreign imports, and thus more difficult to improve our balance of payment position, and stem the flow of gold.” He repeatedly started with the phrase “more difficult”. This repetition, incorporated with logos, helped to drive home the point of how much trouble and difficulty this price rise would cause. Anaphora is a very useful and effective rhetorical devices and President Kennedy uses it beautifully in this speech. President Kennedy also used the rhetorical device of logos to connect may of his points and the problems that will
The US foreign policy moved away from isolationism during the 1890s due to commercial reasons since the US wanted to trade with countries such as Hawaii and Cuba for supplies of tobacco and sugar. This links to the expansion of the USA politically to rival with other nations, as the US were then able to build a naval base at Pearl Harbour, in Hawaii under an 1887 treaty. This enabled the US to move away from isolationism. Another reason for the US foreign policy to move away from isolationism was because of the influence of the Yellow Press on President McKinley since William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer publish sensational stories on the Cuba rebellion. On 8th February, Heart’s Journal published a private letter from the Spanish diplomat describing McKinley.
While these ideals have coincided with numerous overthrows, however they never really had the needed effect until business interests came in to play. It’s not difficult to see that the American government has been considered as a proverbial hit man for American business, while the American public continues to assume that our international interventions were just simple ideals of supplying freedom and democracy in to “savage” societies. This blatant step in the push of American ideology deviated from the Monroe Doctrine’s ideal of isolation, to the insistent aggressive push of the later 20th century started with the plot of missionaries turned business men in the coup to take over the Hawaiian Monarchy. The businessmen wanted to annex Hawaii in to the US, with the help of the military they attempted to gain better access to the sugar markets that were abundant within Hawaii at the time (Kinzer, 2006, p.24). Nonetheless, the troop landing to assist Lorrin Thurston’s conspiracy was not the first to happen in Hawaii, it was preceded by an earlier endeavor by the Hawaiians king using 150 US Marines as his personal
Recovering from the plague and the formation of united, powerful governments (not in a philosophical or political sense of government, but having more to do with the monetary need to support a powerful government and militia) also have ties to materialism. [ii] Travel and the improvement of the quality of one’s life are materialistic methods of coping with a plague. Upon arriving on this new land, after a short while I would have noticed distinctly new vegetations that grew here, like potatoes, pineapples, and vanilla which could be imported back to England as a sign of riches that could enhance the England’s economy while furnishing more voyages to unique and untamed land of riches. [iii] Another documented example of such persuasion was when Columbus reported amazing riches and generosity and the docility of the current inhabitants. [iv] Powerful and united governments are built behind the support of the collective people, and that support is based on the belief that the government (at a time of leadership made famous by George Washington) will protect the people from all threats private and domestic and that protection comes from a militia that is supported by weapons and trust
While Bush was president, mergers were able to get away quite easily past the Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission, where as Obama plans on putting a stop to the leniency of mergers. As President Obama promises to take a more active approach on scrutinizing any deals that might hurt consumers. With the increased merger scrutiny, executives would have to find ways to reduce costs such as merging with a rival, which would also give cause for antitrust concern. As well with two major rivals joining together, would result in a massive amount of jobs lost, which Obama is trying to fix as well as prevent from happening, although interference is unlikely. While the Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914 prevents companies from transactions that
American citizens and politicians alike began calling the conflict the “second war of independence.” The political standpoint of entering the war was to preserve the rights of sailors and would-be American immigrants from British impressments. The US also wanted to prove that big brother Britain could not tell them who they could and could not trade with anymore (meaning France). This was an easy pill for the American public to swallow because of continued tensions with Britain after the Revolution and the rise of the anti-Britain, Democratic-Republican Administration and
