The biggest trial in a long time came to Maycomb which is a small town for a man that was accused for rape. This man would be Tom Robinson, a black man and husband with a disabled left arm who is on trial for his life. Mayella Violet Ewell, daughter of Robert E. Lee Ewell is Tom’s accuser. People from all over the place came to observe this trial. Trial took place in the evening of November 21 1935 on Ewell’s property. Atticus Finch is Tom Robinson’s lawyer. Mr.Gilmer is the Ewell’s lawyer. The judge John Taylor is presiding over the courtroom. First witness is Mr. Hect Tate, which is Maycomb’s sheriff. Mr. Tate was the first to appear to the scene. Atticus first question was if Tom has been in trouble with the law before. Tom replied yes, because he was engaged in a fight with a man armed with a knife. Mr. Robinsin knew Mayella before November 21. For example,” I had to pass her place goin’ to and from the field every day… I picks for Mr. Link Deas,” he explained. Robinson began, and then recalled that he was heading home, and was walking by the Ewell place just and it seemed “real quiet” to him. Then “Ms. Ewell called him onto the property, and said that she had something for him to do inside of the house. She said there was an old door that had to be fixed, but Robinson “pulled [the door] back’n forth and those hinge, was all right.” And this point, he realized the children weren’t around, Mayella Ewell responded by saying she sent them all into town for ice cream. Since the door was in order, Robinson told Ewell that he better get going, but then Ewell asked him to get a box down off of a chiffarobe. “So I done what she told me,” he explained, “and I was just reachin’ when the next thing I knows she- she’d grabbed me around the legs,reached up an’ kissed me ‘side of th’ face.” Tom then claimed Robert Ewell yelled “You goddamn whore, I’ll kill ya” directed at Mayella. When Finch asked Robinson if he raped Mayella Ewell, the entire courtroom held its breath. “I did not, suh.” Tom firmly stated. Lastly Mr. Gilmer asked questions to Tom and that the end of the trail Tom Robinson was not guilty. Either way he would of lost because Maycomb has it in their heads that all black people lie and are to not be trusted around our
