Adam Tucker Philosophy term paper 6/20/12 To Indulge or not to Indulge? To indulge means to give free rein to, to yield to the desire. In life should we indulge? Should we allow ourselves to eat that scrumptious double decker chocolate banana split, or should we stick to what we know is right? Is it wrong to indulge if it brings happiness? Everyone has had that hectic week, running from task to task never having time to sit down and enjoy life. What is a better unwinding than having a nice meal with your friends and family? People see indulging as a form of breaking the rules of life. The question is if you are allowed to break the rules. What are the grounds for indulging? Must you have a down in order to use that indulgence to bring you up or is it okay at anytime? Indulgence is needed in many respects such as entertainment, diet, and companionship. However, there are certain indulgences in which have no needs in society. Today’s society looks at indulging as breaking the rules or just getting away with a little something that you know you’re not supposed to do. I believe indulging is not only wanted at times in life but it is needed. Everyone has had that hectic week, running from task to task never having time to sit down and enjoy life. What is a better unwinding than having that nice big greasy pizza or throwing on the pajamas and watching that chick flick? I believe indulging is necessary in a situation in which you need to unwind. However, I think society has turned indulging into a negative task. Indulging many times also brings about guilty feelings or feelings of failure. I believe in issues such as diet that it is acceptable to indulge if you are willing to accept the consequences. If you pride yourself on putting healthy things in your body then do not indulge with items of food that will not only be bad for your health but will also bring
