Bill Sputnick Professor Eisenhower English 1213-101 12 February 2013 Hero-Tim Duncan We all ask ourselves this. “What is a hero?”, “Is a hero someone we simply admire, respect, or look up to?”, “Is a hero some kind of "superhero" with "super powers?”, or even “What do you have to do to be considered a hero” (Dilbeck)? When the word hero comes to mind or when someone is asked to define a hero, people tend to think of different meanings the word hero has. A few people would think of a hero as someone who has powers, saves lives, someone who goes above and beyond certain expectations, is heroic, strong, handsome, smart, brave, selfless, caring, and other characteristics that people think a hero should have. When coming down to my final selection, I chose Tim Duncan. To me Tim Duncan is a hero in two different areas; on the basketball court and around the community and people. He is a hero because I believe he helps save lives, goes above and beyond certain expectations, is heroic, strong, smart, brave, selfless, caring, and he transforms compassion into heroic action. In doing so, he puts the best effort in service to humanity. “Mr. Duncan is an individual that does certain necessity’s on behalf of others in need, conducts service to the community as a whole, and is involving a risk to physical comfort, social stature, or quality of life” (Tim Duncan Biography- Bio. True Story). Not only does he commit to the community, but also on the basketball court, where he is respected by so many individuals. Growing up in a small town in the Virgin Islands and being poor was hard for him. He didn’t want to live that life, so when turning to basketball, this gave him so many options. The options that he chose ended up leading him to accomplish many things. Now that he is a celebrity in the basketball world, he didn’t forget where he came from, who he was, and he sure didn’t let money take over him. He used his own money and fundraisers to give back to a better cause and that was to save lives and make the community around him a better place. He was doing so by saving lives; using money he donated to have women use for breast cancer surgeries and procedures. Not only did he save their lives but lots of money since a procedure like that doesn’t come cheap at all. He even helped the youth by setting up his camps, building playgrounds, and even gyms. This showed that he was passionate for the kid’s safety. He helps them by making them stay away from gangs, violence, alcohol, and drugs. Doing these things has made him a better person and makes him stand out more than a celebrity or an NBA all-star, but it shows that he is a hero. He is a hero that puts others before him and it clearly shows that he goes above and beyond expectations to be a better person in the
