Western National Insurance Scholarship. Emily Mann. If you could balance on a tightrope, over what landscape would you walk? Why? As I get strapped into my safety gear, I take a deep breath of tropical air and take my first step from the platform to a skinny black tightrope. Suddenly, the golden rays of the sun illuminate the rest of the tightrope and I can feel the sun’s heat against my cheeks as I take a few more steps. When I look up I see a clear blue sky, not a cloud in sight. The warm breeze comforts me and I begin to hear soft waves as I make my way across the tightrope. When I look down for the very first time I see beautiful clear waters, with white sand beaches. I then imagine myself with my toes deep in the hot sand, lying out on my beach towel as I watch the tide roll in, getting closer to me as the day goes on. As I keep walking I see surfers, some young some old, taking on the biggest waves that you could ever imagine. I hold my breath as I see a surfer paddle towards a monster wave and then I exhale as he conquers the wave with no problem at all. When I look farther in the distance I see several beaches, all filled with bronzed civilians enjoying the beauty that is before them. I then slowly take more steps down the rope; alongside me are many palm trees, some with coconuts and some without. I spot the palm trees all around as I make my way through what seems to be a small town. Below me I see small shack-like houses, with brown roofs. Some of the houses have a pool in the back, even though they are only minutes away from a gorgeous ocean. I see children running around in their summer apparel, and no shoes on. I can hear their laughs as they chase each other down to the white sandy beach. The gravel roads that lead down to the beach are surrounded by bright green grass.
