Facing the Struggles of Fate Why do so many people believe that what fortune tellers tell them about their fate is true? Or things like fate tests tell people about their fate are true? Nowadays, people have these things, but back then during when the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare started, the characters challenged fate. “Unhappy fortune![…]A greater power than we can contradict.”(5.2.17…5.3.153). Fate conquers the Friar and his plan for Romeo and Juliet. Many characters challenging fate have cause deaths in both the Montague and Capulet family. As star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet struggle to conquer fate and the Friar assists them by taking fate into his own hands as well. Friar Laurence takes fate into his hands countless times for Romeo and Juliet to be with each other. Romeo asks the Friar for him to marry him to Juliet. He agrees but he knows that they aren’t supposed to meet or even marry. Friar marries them secretly. Although, marrying Romeo and Juliet secretly doesn’t follow society but Romeo trusts Friar Laurence and he is willing to marry them for Romeo. The Friar gives Juliet a plan to get out of the marriage with Paris: Hold, daughter! I do spy a kind of hope, Which craves as desperate and execution As that is desperate which we would prevent, If, rather than to marry County Paris, Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself, Then is it likely thou wilt undertake A thing like death to chide away this shame, That copest with death himself to ’scape from it; And, if thou darest, I’ll give thee remedy. (4.1.68-76) Friar gives Juliet a vile where she will drink it and look dead for forty-two hours. He sends a letter for Romeo but it couldn’t be received by him because of a plague. Romeo does not know about this plan and believes that Juliet is truly dead.
