Melissa Amaya English 10 CP Miss. Tsiaklis January 28, 2015 Theme-Focus Paper Ignorance is the lack of information and knowledge. Ignorance can mean that you are unaware, or lack details about a certain topic, or you are being rude. Stupidity and ignorance are often distinguished, but in the end both can lead to serious actions. Being an ignorant person can be a negative thing since ignorance comes from a lie.You are lying to yourself, thinking you know more than everyone else and feeling like you are better than anyone else. You start becoming greedy and selfish, thinking that your way is better. People start accusing others when they are afraid of the consequences. The girls, being afraid of getting condemned, started accusing others in order to save themselves. Not only did they not have enough information to support their claim, they also caused the suffering of others. Mrs. Putnam accuses Goody Osburn of murdering her babies on page 49. She exclaims, ‘’I knew it! Goody Osburn were midwife to me three times. I begged you, Thomas, did I not? I begged him not to call Osburn because I feared her. My babies always shriveled in her hands!’’ She claims that everytime Goody Osburn was a midwife, her babies would die in her hands therefore agreeing with Abigail on Osburn being a witch. Anne Putnam claims Goody Osburn is a witch yet is lacking evidence to support her claim. She says, Elizabeth: John, I counted myself so plain, so poorly made, no honest love could come to me! Suspicion kissed you when I did; I never knew how I should say my love. (137) Elizabeth reveals to Proctor that she could never learn to love herself first which is why she could never learn how to love Proctor properly. She also expresses how no one can judge Proctor but himself. In order to love someone else, you have to learn how to love yourself first. Elizabeth in the past would not let go of the affair but that was because she was being stubborn in the situation. She did not look at both side of the situation which shows her ignorance in the past. Proctor is confessing to witchcraft on page 139. He
