Mary Warren was forced by John Proctor to speak the church about confessing/lying so Elizabeth could be back home with John. Abigail found out that all this was happening and she was mad, very mad. Most girls were afraid of Abigail because she was a threat to them. Abigail watched her parents die right in front of her, which scared the girls. Abigail also threatened the girls; she told them she would do horrible things if they ever turned on her.
Unlike the girls in Salem, Abigail is not submissive which is why her uncle is suspicious and even more because she’s rebellious. That alone was considered filthy and impure. In Act one, Abigail states these words, alluding about her past affair with Proctor. “I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men!
Bullshit is a double-deceit towards a person, because you are hiding the fact that you do not know the information about a topic, and you are spouting out information which you are not 100% sure of, and claiming as if you know enough to hold a conversation. Frankfurt’s statement holds water, because it is a documented argument that elegantly depicts the fight between lies or bullshit being more problematic. I agree with Frankfurt, because I myself am guilty of bullshitting my way through a few essays I have written in the past. I believe bullshit is worse than lying because you don’t think as much about the topic you are speaking about. When you lie about something, you put a lot of thought into it and decide yourself whether the truth or a lie is better for you.
With this next story, you’ll realise that “desperate” is just a scratch on the surface of how these unfortunate, undermined women felt. “The wire” was the most common self help scheme around. It was poked inside the uterus until internal bleeding was caused; this progressed into an infection, killing the fetus.
Joseph Strorm is one of these hippocrates who does not believe in the rights of the deviations, who had forced his sister, Harriet, to basically never to come in contact with him because she had a deviation of her own. "Send her away. Tell her to leave the house - and take that with her." (p.71) - No one had wanted to be apart of someone who had been a mutant; they had been completely excluded from family and friends. Some positivity in this book includes strong characters who are very accepting, and who are religious, like Aunt Harriet.
The id being, “the dark, inaccessible part of our personality” ("New Introductory Lectures"), clearly proves how someone in Sarah’s life would be unable to completely understand her due to the fact that she hid her sorrowful past. Sarah was alone in the world even though she had both a loving husband and son because she would not share her feelings with
The first conflict is based on the mother and her children. “They looked at her coldly, as if they were finding fault with her” (Lawrence 28). The conflict with the children could be due to the fact that they see their mother with no real career objectives. "The mother said: 'I will see if I can't make something.' But she did not know where to begin.
Mike McCracken American Literature Who is to blame? In The Crucible, the character Abigail Williams is to blame for the 1692 witch trials. Abigail is a mean and vengeful person who always wants her way, no matter who she hurts. Throughout the play her accusations and lies cause many people pain and suffering, but she seemed to never care for any of them except John Proctor, whom she had an affair with seven months prior to the beginning of the play. John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth had employed Abigail, until Elizabeth found out the affair and threw Abigail out.
The people of the town were pressured, accused, and tested simple tests but the girls would scream with such pain whenever the accused spoke. The victims, the girls, and the judges all were consumed in the anarchy and lost all sanity. Were people convicted of not only being witches in Salem but across the country suspicion arose and people convicted women of being witches for the simplest causes. Two girls took a joke way too far and caused disorder across the country. Not all "witches" were from Salem, MA.
Ignorance is Destruction Ken Liew By the subjective nature of perception, human beings are left to face conflict and sadly experience the inevitable by-product known as suffering. Perhaps it is through such suffering that defines the world we live in, a world which places high expectations on individuals and ridicules those who fail to meet them. It is important as individuals to acknowledge we are unable to fully dictate our own circumstances. However, there are many people that fail to cope with their insecurities and trick themselves into believing an alternate reality exists in order to bring happiness, avoid ridicule and ultimately maintain a sense of security in the world they live in. It is through self-ignorance and the notion that one’s happiness can be attained through living in the fantasy world that coerces most into avoiding the truth.
