Haley Hemeter Lit. Paper # 2 Janie and Tea Cakes Connection Trust, communication, and understating are key factors in a successful relationship, and I believe Tea Cake and Janie display this throughout the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neil Hurston. Janie, a rare young soul who never gives up on finding true love, and Tea Cake, a young man who loves Janie for who she is, fall in love with one another right away. Tea Cake and Janie enjoy a happy marriage and life together because they have a deep understanding of one another. They have the ability to communicate and learn from one another, and for the most part, they trust each other. From the moment Janie and Tea Cake first meet they have a real connection with one another. They begin their romance laughing, flirting, and teasing each other. Tea Cake offers to teach Janie how to play checkers, which is something she was never given the opportunity to learn in her previous marriage to Joe Starks. Janie says; “Jody useter tell me Ah never would learn. It was too heavy fuh mah brains” (96). The narrator explains how Janie was glowing inside when Tea Cake shows her how to play. “Somebody wanted her to play. Somebody thought it natural for her to play” (96). Something so simple as being taught how to play checkers, thrilled Janie and it is the first time I believe Janie felt respected by a man. Tea Cake and Janie go on to meet again and again, each time Tea Cake showing Janie something she had never done before. He takes her fishing, to a picnic, and they end up spending all their time together. Tea Cake is really affectionate with Janie and even combs her hair and picks the dandruff out. This shows how confortable they are together already. Tea Cake is giving Janie that deep connection with a man she always wanted. Tea Cake thinks Janie is very beautiful and tells her; “You got de world in uh jug
