Summary: The main character of story is the boy Flegg. Flegg together with his friends was wandering out from the park into an area of back streets. There they found the ground of disused gasworks. They played, while they threw bricks against an erection. Than Flegg’s friends laid a bet that Flegg couldn’t climb клайм as high as he could throw. The boy agreed to climb on the top of gasworks. There were two ladders, one was a Jacob’s ladder and another one was a staircase. Flegg’s friends insisted on using the Jacob’s ladder and the girl, who Flegg liked, gave him her hanky to tie it on the top. Also we can follow the development of such conflicts as the quiet girl against herself and against her mates, conflict Flegg against himself. I would like to speak about this last conflict. The story “The Vertical Ladder” is based on the conflict Flegg against himself, so it’s a significant conflict. At first there was an innocent remark of one Flegg’s friends, who thrust him into an impetuous импечьюэс action. We can follow that struggle between Flegg’s natural fear and his intention to impress his friends. The author uses many stylistic devices in order to embody that struggle in Flegg’s personality. At the beginning of the story the friends were eager to make Flegg climb the ladder. It was difficult for him even to make a decision. We can see it in Flegg’s speech in that moment “Off we go then!” – it was all, what he can say then. The author shows us that Flegg tried to cover his perturbations. He knew that if he hadn’t taken a dare, he would have been laughed at. Beyond that brief answer of the boy we see that Flegg managed to put his fear under
