The novel ‘don’t call me Ismael’ by the award winning author of ‘the running man’ Michael Gerard Baurer, is truly an inspiring novel. He introduces the main character Ishmael who goes through the process of change and development. The issue of development is undoubtedly obvious throughout the progression of the novel. Ishmael develops from shy and quiet, to a schoolboy complete with self-confidence, thanks to one special person. Also, Ishmael has been able to make more friends that get a stronger bond throughout the novel. Finally Ishmael can stand up for himself and others against bullying. Ishmael develops from a shy boy who couldn’t stand up for himself, but that changed when he met James Scobie. James started at St Daniel’s Boys College and Ishmael’s whole perspective of life was turned upside down. At first he may of thought that Scobie was a “living, breathing, kick me sign”. Scobie helped Ishmael get his self-reliance and self-acceptance back by compelling him to speak at the debate in their seminary’s debating club. James had a lot to do with Ismael getting his assurance back, he knew it would be a daunting thing for Ishmael to get up and speak in front of an audience. He did it to let Ishmael get over his uncertainties and be confident. As James quoted in the novel, “one can only handle so much fear”. Ishmael has been able to make more friends that get a stronger bond throughout the novel. During Ishmael’s time in the debating team, Ishmael gained confidence in himself, he also made some friends on the way that he wouldn’t have been able to have without his self-assurance. It’s important to make the right choice of friends, and that’s what Ishmael did. He found out that Orazio gets bullied too, but razza uses humour to dodge Barry’s comments. Scobie also copped a lot of mean comments by Barry, but Scobie was confident and stood up for himself “………….” By
