Vagina Monologues As defined by its mission statement on the schools official website, “The University of San Diego is a Roman Catholic institution committed to advancing academic excellence, expanding liberal and professional knowledge, creating a diverse and inclusive community, and preparing leaders dedicated to ethical conduct and compassionate service.” USD makes it a point to not only better the lives of the students who attend the university, but to also be a source of information and fulfillment for the surrounding community as well. Although the play lacks a definitive and concrete mission statement, The Vagina Monologues and it’s original author Eve Ensler also search to better the lives of those not only in the surrounding community but in various countries around the world as well by ending the silence and taboo of women speaking up and against sexual violence and gender expectations. Neither the University of San Diego nor The Vagina Monologues comes without its critics, yet one cannot argue that they both strive to create a better good. Despite some issues of a few slight contradicting ethical topics, I see no reason as to why Ensler’s play The Vagina Monologues should not be performed on the campus of USD due to the fact that both aim to speak out and aid those that need help and to better the lives of the surrounding community through educational discourse. The whole purpose behind Eve Ensler’s creation of The Vagina Monologues was to express her belief that silence is not an appropriate answer for women and their sexuality. Ensler took the time to interview approximately 200 women of varying demographics and then compile all of their stories, including her own, into 12 monologues ranging in topics from loving ones own body all the way to homosexuality and rape.
