Early in Macbeth, one is introduced to the use of negative imagery and the portrayal nature as a theme. In the beginning of the play, one is already able to understand the bad events taking place within the scene: (All Witches) When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning, or in rain? When the hurly- burly’s done, When the battle’s lost, and won. That will ere the set of sun.
Successful authors incorporate a variety of motifs in their writing in order to spark interest within readers. These motifs often have great significance and can be very symbolical. Have you ever read a book twice and absorbed more information than you did the first time? Motifs and symbols can be hidden throughout novels, creating a challenging piece for the readers. In “The Great Gatsby,” F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the motif of weather change in order to foreshadow mood changes within the novel.
Write about the way Rossetti aims to make the beginning of Goblin Market exciting. In Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti metre, imagery, repetition along with other structure, language and form techniques are used to make the beginning of the poem exciting. In the first line of stanza one, Rossetti uses contrast to excite the reader with “Morning and evening”. The word “Morning” could represent a force of good as light represents innocence while “evening” represents a force of evil. This sets the tone of the poem suggesting that there is a struggle between good and evil creating a sense of anticipation, the reader wanting to find out which side prevails.
Significantly, the witches open the play, a further indication of their importance to the plot. The first thing that we notice is that they are being identified with dark powers and chaos. The stage directions tell us that they meet during a storm. In order to make them seem particularly powerful and different from other characters, Shakespeare has them speaking in rhyming couplets, “When shall we three meet again In thunder, lightning, or in rain.” Not only do these opening lines introduce the witches’ speech patterns, they also establish their powers as they can predict the weather and control it. The weather conditions when they meet can all be linked with the theme of chaos and disorder, which foreshadows their role within the play as it is their predictions which awaken the seeds of ambition within Macbeth.
This novel uses the emotions of the narrator, the actions and events in the story and the way that they connect with and clearly stem from society at the time that the novel was written, to make the novel easy to relate to for a reader and allows them to take on board the lessons and themes of The Handmaid's Tale in a more personal and meaningful way. A fictional novel can be made to feel real to a reader by use of details. If a book uses a lot of small details and intricacies it creates a world around the novel that can feel convincing and suck the reader in. Often books that invent a world tend to play off the world that already exists around them and then alter things so that the reader has a way 'in' to the plot and a level to connect with it on and then can open their mind to what the author chooses to add. Some famous series that do this include Harry Potter by J.K.Rowling, Lord of the Rings by J.R.R.Tolkein and Naughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman.
Lord of the Flies – Foreshadowing Foreshadowing is the technique of arranging events and information in a narrative in such a way that later events are prepared for, or foretold in anticipation. For example, a well-constructed novel will imply at the very beginning what the outcome may be. The end is contained in the beginning and this gives structural and thematic unity. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, the author presents many examples of foreshadowing and this presentation will display where they occurred and how they impacted the rest of the book. During chapter two when Roger and a few of the other kids start rolling boulders down the side of the mountain and early in the novel when there is talk about killing pigs for food, meat and
She also cleverly uses the weather and surrounding to mould the correct atmosphere, which influences our views on whatever aspect she concentrates on. First of all, the story is narrated by three people. This in itself is very manipulative. Each narrated section of the story uses varied vocabulary, and is structured differently from one another. Mary Shelley uses different narrators to manipulate our views back and forth.
By the Waters of Babylon Scenes are easily depicted through the usage of descriptive adjectives and words that flow together to create a scene in a persons mind when reading a story. When an author uses imagery in his or her stories, they are creating a more realistic and visual understanding of what they’re reading. In By the Waters of Babylon by Stephen Vincent Benét, imagery is used to describe the atmosphere, setting, and events in an artistic way. For example, imagery is used to describe when John was waiting for a sign. Benét wrote, “I was very still - I could feel the sky above me and the earth beneath.
In addition, layering mystical qualities in the image of the wind contributes to the fantastical feel of the story. To further the impression that the reader will be taken to a dreamy world, Nabokov then introduces a series of unusual characters and images inhabiting the deep court yard – “the melancholy ragmen”, “an obese blond woman with a lovely voice”, “the wail of a crippled violin”. In this almost hallucinatory world the main character falls asleep. This is the departing point from reality into fantasy. Nabokov interweaves the imagery from the myth of Elijah and his chariot as a main cause for thunderstorms with the main character’s strong emotional reaction to the raging element to create an atmosphere.
In the text The Princess Bride the author uses many techniques to make the story interesting and entertaining.
