Atticus Finch is ridiculed by the townspeople for being a moral human being and sticking to his beliefs in defending an innocent colored man. As explained by Lee through her characters Tom Robinson, Boo Radley and Atticus Finch, the mockingbird is a symbolic representation of innocence, purity and virtue. To begin, the community of Maycomb basically indirectly murdered Tom Robinson. Despite the fact the man was helpful and kind - especially toward Mayella, who charged him of raping her - Tom was sent to trial and then found guilty even after Atticus Finch had verified his guiltlessness. His responsibility was all based on the color of his skin, not his true moral character.
“To Kill a Mockingbird” helped voice Harper Lee’s opinions of injustices in America. Throughout the text the following characters suffered prejudice: Scout Finch, Atticus Finch, Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson symbolises the millions of black people who were convicted unfairly of crimes they didn’t commit. Scout experiences many injustices because she is so young and just a child. Miss Caroline unfairly punishes her when she tells Scout she’s not allowed to be taught to read anymore.
Atticus is Jem and Scout’s father who stands up for negroes. Mr. Ewell is the abusive drunk father of Mayella Ewell. And Tom Robinson ins the wrongly convicted negro that supposedly raped Mayella. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has the time to read it all and likes a good, deep book. What really grabbed me was the dual story line on the kids and Boo Radley and Atticus defending Tom Robinson’s case.
The Tom Robinson Trial By: Mr. Underwood How a man can live with killing a cripple, I cannot understand. It is a sin, whether the cripple is standing, sitting or escaping. Tom Robinson had unfair disadvantages, neither of them were his fault. For one, his left arm was useless. He was a colored man, accused of raping a low class white woman.
Racism is one of the worst kinds of prejudice in any society, and it can and does ruin people’s lives. It was racism that led to the death of Tom’s Robinson’s. He was a victim of racism by being falsely accused and then found guilty of raping Mayella Ewall, a white woman. This statement is true, because the events of what happened as told by Mayella and her father, Bob Ewell, were accepted as proof by a prejudiced, all-white jury at the trial. Tom’s lawyer, Atticus Finch, does his very best to represent Tom and provide the facts and evidence of Tom’s innocence.
Tom Robinson was blamed for raping Mayella Ewell because her father has caught her kissing a black man, Tom Robinson, and at that time it was unacceptable to do so. The reader feels bad for Mayella because she is so lonely and Tom was the only one who was kind to her but from the other side the reader doesn’t like Mayella because she blamed an innocent man who was just trying to help and by doing so she symbolically killed a mockingbird. After being put to jail due to his skin colour, Tom Robinson tries to run away but gets shot. Later on Mr. Underwood “linked Tom’s death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds...” Because it was obvious that he just like the bird did no harm to anyone but only tried to help. Another mockingbird in the novel is Boo Radley, "Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that's why his hands were bloodstained – if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood
Even though it is obvious that Mayella’s dad beat her and Tom is not guilty, the jury still convicts Tom Robinson because of his race. Some time after the trail, Boo Radley, the recluse who they used to bully, saves Jem and Scout from an attack from Mayella’s furious father. It is then when Scout grasps the lessons of her childhood, as taught to her by her father, Atticus. It is common knowledge that kids pick up their morals from their parents, and in the book, Harper Lee expresses that idea by implying that the
They were nine african american teens arrested for crimes they didn't commit. Having to go to court with poor representatives, biased juries, and a little bit of evidence led to the nine boys being sentenced to death. (Other half of paragraph missing) Harper Lee's purpose and perspective in writing To Kill a Mockingbird, was to illustrate to the reader the severity of the racial issues in the south during the 1930's. She wanted to show that white people are just as bad as colored people. Tom Robinson's trial
However, in both instances, the outcome of each situation that the African Americans were in made it so that they paved the way for future generations to come. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson is wrongly accused of committing the crime of raping a young girl. Immediately he is thought of to have done the crime, simply because of the color of skin. Everyone in the town of Maycomb jumpes to the conclusion that just because Tom Robinson is of African American decent, that it must have been him who committed the crime. It took numerous days
To Kill a Mocking Bird There is only one race, the human race. No one should be hated on for the colour of skin they were born with. Throughout the novel “To Kill a Mocking Bird” by Harper Lee we are shown a small happy southern town at first and then we are shown the horrible things that racism can cause. The story was set in 1935 a time when racism was seen in everyday life. The story is shown through the eyes of Scout and Jem Fintch who are both growing up with the debate that involves her fathers Atticus Fitches lawsuit.
