In the essay, “The Smurfette Principle”, the author Katha Politt explains how there should be more female dominant characters in the world of movies, books and cartoons. Parents usually give in when their child asks for something. Katha Politt gave her daughter “The Little Mermaid” cassette. Areal is a heroine, she is brave and encouraging such as Cinderella, Barbie and Sleeping Beauty. Movies with a boy cast are going to be the more popular rated movies at the video store. On the television most of all the cartoons do not have a female dominate character. It’s like being back in the black and white days where women didn’t have rights. But, some of the most successful books have been female based characters and not male characters. It’s just there are so many boy books that hardly anyone stops to notice the girl books. Any of the characters from the books could easily have been a girl; it’s just the male dominance issue is stopping that from happening. Along with all of this comes sexism and how it plays a role in children’s lives. The child learns from what he or she sees, and sexism is a big thing. For example, a little girl who believes only boys can be doctors and only girls can be nurses. Same with boys, they think they should obviously have the higher degree. Boys are learning at an early age to think that the girls are of lesser value. The girls are thinking the same of them self.
