“Snow White”: Then and now Fairy Tales are filled with magic, love, and conquest of good over evil. Fairy tales can be a window to other worlds so that children can make their wildest dreams come true. When I was a kid Snow White showed me all of these things, but looking back now at Snow White the characters, plot, and theme shows something in a different way. Looking back at the characters of Snow White they were very unique to me as a kid. For example, Snow White was known for her beauty at such a young age, “The fairest of them all.” Also, the Queen evil as can be and envious of Snow’s beauty.
Most people who are familiar with Cinderella have little understanding of the subliminal messages associated and the consequences involved. To many, Cinderella is a harmless story of a young girl who struggles through life, is finally able to achieve her dreams, and lives happily ever after. In reality, the patriarchal gender expectations and rewards associated with Disney’s Cinderella can be damaging to young girls and their self-image. Therefore, in order to render the misogynistic ideologies of these stories invalid, modern pedagogy should be recreated to incorporate potential empowerment for both genders. Most people believe fairy tales to be harmless to a girl’s development, unable to comprehend the reality of the situation: the gender stereotyping involved in these stories can be influential in several ways (Bonds-Raake 232).
How the film 'Shrek' parodies the traditional fairytale In 1994 Jeffrey Katzenberg left disney after a decade of service to the famous animation corporation "Walt Disney", after being denied his much anticipated promotion to second in command to Micheal Eisner. He then formed DreamWorks SKG; Spielsberg, Katzenberg, Geffen as Disneys rival animators. Dreamworks produced this animated film because it challenged the typically predictable fairytale story of “Walt Disney” productions. Dreamworks had to make a big movie so it could create an impact into the world of media like their rival company Walt Disney. They produced this type of animated film because it would appeal to a mass audience, ranging from the elderly, surprisingly entertaining the middle age adults and of course the children who are the main targeted audience.
Fairytale’s true meaning We all grew up with the classic fairytales; Snow white, Cinderella, the Little Mermaid. But, do any of you know where the stories originated from? Or do you even know the true story? I guarantee the authentic stories are not what you will be expecting. Companies, such as Disney have twisted, tangled and tweaked the original stories to please the targeted audience, hence where our happy endings come from.
Wonderland from Carol’s Mind and Through Disney’s Eyes Carol’s absurd world of wonderland and the journey of Alice into her imagination are much more than a children’s movie. Analyzing the symbols and structure of the story, one can see that it becomes more complex and abstract as Alice gets further and further along her journey into Wonderland. Lewis Carol wrote the book in 1876 and Disney produced its own animated version of Alice in Wonderland for theaters. The Disney production aimed at a younger audience, shows Wonderland as a very colorful and vibrant place, full of flowers, trees and a majestic garden of wonder and glory. Although Disney is successful at doing that, it fails in showing the hidden aspects of the story, the aspects of the novel that need to be dug into to comprehend.
Claudia Castro Professor Echols English 1310 9am 1 Octuber 2013 Disney Snow-White and Little Snow-White The story of Snow White and Little Snow White are actually very different, but at the same time both stories have a lot in common. Both stories perfectly fit into the classic fairytale mold: princess, the evil queen/stepmom, handsome prince, happy ending. However their audiences, their plots, and their endings are in direct contrast with each other. Like many of the fairytales they all have a purpose these two are no different, the ages of the girls, poisons red apple, death. The Disney story about Snow White is a tender version of the fairy tale.
Artificially Perfect When invented in the late 1950s by Mattel, the Barbie doll was considered the model woman. For many generations little girls have played with this doll and some even thought that’s how they were supposed to look and act. The Barbie doll was everthing. She was the perfect housewive, she had a career for herself, and she was even the party girl all while mainting her perfect hair, makeup, and tiny wasitline. Within the past few years the idea of the Barbie doll has been questioned by society: is Barbie what every woman is to suppose to look and act like?
Beauty pageant participant, Kelsey Killeen said, “When I started going into pageants, it gave me so much self-confidence.” Pageant moms believe pageants are a good way to teach their daughters skills needed in life. Eight main skills mothers thought or hoped their children would learn from pageants were acquiring confidence, learning to be comfortable onstage and around strangers, gaining poise, determining the best way to present oneself, realizing the need for practice, learning good sportsmanship, becoming more outgoing and learning to listen (“Child Beauty”). Some parents have even said that they have placed their children in pageants because of a birth defect their child had (“Child Beauty”). These parents wanted to support the fact that their children are normal and beautiful no matter if they have birth defects (“Child Beauty”). In numerous pageants it is required that the contestant raise money for a local
Tinker Bell is Peter’s Fairy she lives on his shoulder like an Eagle on a mountain top. Tink is loyal and faithful with a mission to protect the lost boys from Hook’s wrath. Over the past one hundred and three years Peter Pan has morphed into a fairy tale that surpasses some of the accepted and well known fairy tales from the past. Now it may be in the top ten in popularity in the new world. Walt Disney saw that Peter Pan was being shunned and decided to show the literary community what they have overlooked.
Reality Princesses With the stage lights shinning down, a little 5 year old girl in a pink dress covered in rhinestones prances around the stage. She is stunning without a doubt, but when these babies are getting spray tans, teeth whitening, and putting on the amount of makeup a 25 year old wears, it’s not necessarily what one would call fulfilling their childhood. As a little girl, they of course want to be called a princess, however, who wants their girl to think that they are the prettiest thing that ever walked the earth. This type of competition has created a new change in the American family. Not saying that there haven’t been pageants before, but standards and emphasis has grown with such a judgmental society.
