Setting aside the dubious ability of a child so young to have any perspective of “need” or “desire” beyond the animalistic sense of the word, Levi’s explanation demonstrates how ECs turn to the rigorous social order of Evangelical Christianity as a means of dealing with their anomie without resorting to deviance per se. Levi is not alone; the film reveals “43% of Evangelical Christians become ‘born-again’ before the age of 13.” Echoing this sentiment is the documentary Turning Muslim in Texas, which illustrates how some ECs and stricter non-Evangelical Christians have converted to Islam in a search for belief system that more strictly regulates personal behaviour (Turning Muslim in Texas). The film compliments Jesus Camp by elaborating that for these converts, the benefits religion gives them in terms of norm-establishment and behaviour regulation are more important than the truth or history of the religion itself2. 2 This argument does not imply the inherent falsehood of either Christianity or Islam, only that for these converts the primary purpose of religion is to help regulate their behaviour rather than represent truth or
Essay # 1 on: “The Butterfly Mosque” by G. Willow Wilson In G. Willow Wilson’s The Butterfly Mosque, Wilson presents her personal experience as a young American Muslim woman coming to terms with an understanding of her as she navigates evolving concepts of religion, cross-cultural dynamics, and womanhood while she pursues a romantic relationship. Wilson explores both the negative and positive aspects of a conversion to Islam and ensuing efforts to reconcile Eastern and Western beliefs, the inaccurate portrayals of Muslims in the media and public discourse, the role of women in Islamic society, and cultivating a healthy, romantic relationship in an Islamic context. In portraying both positive and negative aspects throughout her memoir, Wilson presents an affirmative appraisal of an American Muslim woman’s relationship with Islam. Wilson’s prose is fluid and beautifully describes the nuances of everyday life she experiences while in Egypt. For example, as she elucidates her experience in a cross-cultural relationship with an Egyptian man, Omar, she has the following insight: Cultural habits are by and large irrational, emerge irrationally, and are practiced irrationally.

(the “act/adjust”) Well, the leader is no longer alive today but his speeches and sermons are still received, taught, and followed through the Nation of Islam. However, during the time in which he was still alive Malcolm gained more knowledge during his journey to Mecca and in return he shared that knowledge with his own people and they form a new religious organization of Muslims.
