The huge black market for alcohol controlled by crime organizations grew so large that many of the criminal groups were able to build their empires mainly on profits from illegal alcohol. This in turn made them grow in power and their influence on society increased. Many politicians and law enforcements became corrupt, and turned a blind eye to the illegal activity since they were bribed. Prohibition also led to economic consequences. Before the liquor ban, many states relied on tax revenues, and when Prohibition went into effect, those revenues were lost- causing the United Nations to lose 11 billion
However, these favors were actually in return for their votes at the ballot box. The association’s leaders were supported by many of New York’s citizens whom they helped out personally or simply scared into voting their way. They were bashed by many other politicians and influential citizens deeming the Tammany Hall practices corrupt and undemocratic. For those involved in Tammany Hall’s reign over New York, they viewed their personal gains from the association to be “honest graft,” as George Washington Plunkitt explains. (http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/5030/) (I know I need to work on this, I was having a hard time coming up with a good thesis..) Tammany Hall was originally the Tammany Association, which was formed in 1789 by William Mooney.
Martha felt the government was out to get her, because she was a successful woman in a business world of men. Martha was fairly and appropriately targeted because of her celebrity. Maintaining ethical and legal norms is one of the jobs of the government, and the prosecution of prominent people makes a much greater impact on everyone else than the anonymous prosecution of an average citizen. Cheating and lying to the government about it is, sadly, too widespread to apprehend everyone doing it. The next best thing is to make an example out of a famous person like Martha.

Members of an organized crime were part of a “complex pattern of illegal activity that includes gambling, prostitution, loan sharking, narcotics trafficking, and different types of planned and coordinated acts of fraud, theft and extortion.”(Gale, par. 1). Capone’s gang, often called the syndicate, was able to take advantage of people to make a maximum profit.

And then retreated back into their money..." They both had their

This new era was known as a time filled with glamour and opulence wilder than anyone could imagine. The wealthy thrived and those not as fortunate celebrated in ways they could afford. Jazz often got connected with alcohol, intimate dancing and “other socially questionable activities”. It became popular on the radio, in pubs, and speakeasies (illegal pubs) all over New York and Chicago. The famed “flapper” style of dress appeared alongside this new trend as women started to rebel against the social norms.
“Alcohol consumption was one of the most popular forms of entertainment. As a result of alcohol abuse during this time, poverty and unemployment numbers rose.” This was widely considered an issue equal in importance with the fight for women's suffrage during this time.
