An ox usually strong and firm. The man is also known to be strong. Therefore, he is like an ox. 2.3. When she sat near the fireplace, she was warm like the sun. 2.4. In this example, the girl is being compared to the sun. The sun has a very hot and warm surface. The girl is warm because of the fireplace, which is also hot. Edgar Allan Poe is an American author and poet who wrote a number of infamous poems about gothic related things. Some of these poems sometimes are told through a perspective of a crazy man. The quote comes from the poem, the Raven, his most successful and well-known poem ever created. 6.18. The phrase after the semicolon is a good example of personification because it connects the fire in the fireplace to the human quality of dying. Fire does not die like a human, but it does go out gradually. Kind of like a person’s lifespan. 6.19. The wind gently ran through the night sky. 6.20. The example here shows the nonhuman thing, wind and how it goes through the landscape and the human quality of running. Wind does not run but it goes fast sometimes, like a human running. 6. Repetition: Repeating of a word, phrase or idea to create a desired literary effect. 7.21. The example above comes from the WWII British Prime Minster, Winston Churchill. Prime Minster Churchill came to office in 1940 after his predecessor, Neville Chamberlain, resigned due to Germany’s rapid expansion during the early parts of the war.
