Imagine that you were a high school student, one the last day of class you turn to the person next to you and ask "what are you doing this summer?” and he replies, "I have cancer, I'll be in the hospital this summer". How is your reaction when someone tells you they have had cancer? For most it would be; shock, sympathy, feelings of pity or sorrow for the person. These are typical reactions. However, what if I told you that instead of feelings of sympathy and pity, in reality, the reaction that most cancer patients want from you is understanding and acceptance. "Patients must feel secure and accepted, regardless of their condition, appearance mood or demands. They need to be reminded that even though they may look dramatically different, they are no less the person they were before the cancer".(Lang 267). However, for young cancer patients this may be even more difficult, most younger people don't accept the various changes and differences that cancer patients go though, they may even began to shun or make fun of the difference between themselves and the person with or living with/after cancer. So what is cancer? According to PubMed Health: Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Cells are the building blocks of living things. Cancer grows out of normal cells in the body. Normal cells multiply when the body needs them, and die when the body doesn't Martinus 2 need them. Cancer occurs when the growth of cells in the body is out of control and cells divide too quickly. It can also occur when cells forget how to die. There are many different kinds of cancers. Cancer can develop in almost any organ or tissue, such as the lung, colon, breast, skin, bones, or nerve tissue. There are many causes of cancers: * Benzene and other chemicals * Drinking excess alcohol * Environmental toxins, such as certain poisonous
