With emotional development, a child requires warmth, support, and affection. Between birth and 9 months, a child should be able to respond to the mothers face and enjoy the company of familiar people, enjoy games such as ‘peek-a-boo’, and will be very dependent on their care-givers for comfort. From 1 year and 2 years, the child will become independent and confident, and from this will enjoy performing in front of an audience, be more cooperative and enjoy playing alongside other children. Between 2 and 3 years, the confidence of the child will increase resulting in them playing happily alongside other children adults.
To form relationships with parents, carers and children. If the children see a good flow of communication between staff and parent/ carer it helps them settle easier and provides them with a good role models in communication skills. There may be times when you need to communicate with other persons e.g. health visitors, visitors of interest (fire, police, vets etc...) teachers and other agencies. So knowing the appropriate manner in which to communicate is useful for example coming down to the child’s height to talk to them instead of standing over them.

203/39 Observing children is an excellent way of checking a child’s physical, spiritual and emotional developmental progress. You become aware of what a child needs and what they are interested in. You can then support them and build on their strengths as well as helping them in areas where they may need development. Observations help to keep parents informed a child’s progress and often highlights interests or areas that parents can help with too. They also provide good information to fellow professionals.

It’s important for socialization to occur because as we mentioned in class, a child is more likely to become successful in their society if they are socialized in a way that abides by and fit’s in their culture. Ponijao and Hattie are socialized in different ways. Ponijao was socialized more so by her whole community, rather than just her parents like Hattie initially was.
You must be professional and approachable to children giving them lots of praise and eye contact. If you do this the child feels comfortable around you. If the child feels happy and comfortable and able to trust you then you are making the right impression on them. Allowing the child to come to you when they feel uncomfortable or they need assistance with something. Children tend to role play themselves through play playing schools and playing the role of teachers, playing mums and dads, etc so this proves that the way in which adults behave has a strong impact on how children look up to adults as role models.

At this point children know that they are a person all their own, and they begin to discover what kind of person they will become. Children at this age identify hugely with their parents who they view as powerful and beautiful. At this age children also gain a deeper understanding of self and others. Children often describe themselves by things that they do or own, they find differences in one another by such things as color of hair and height.
